There's only one way to find out... Pull the drive and split the upper from the lower. When you do, you can access the pump and remove it. The shaft condition will be obvious.

The ball gears NEVER unmesh. Shifting happens in the lower unit only.<br />The hydro unit is an oil pump in the lower unit that builds hydraulic pressure. The shift cable operates a "valve" that sends the pressure to a hydraulic piston that mechanically engages you in F or R (I think that's basically the deal)<br /><br />Later drives skipped this step and the cable hooks directly to the F/R mechanism<br /><br />skipping?<br /><br />are we sure the ignition isn't cutting out or something.<br /><br />If the drive shift out of gear under load, that's gotta tear up the gears, no? Thanks for the explanation, thats what I wanted to know. First, the boat never jumps out of gear. It skips for a second. No loud bang or thud. Feels like a slipped prop might feel, but I tried 2, it's not slipping. <br /><br />Second, What is the grinding sound when you put it in gear? Is that the gears in the lower unit? I am real gentle when putting it in and out of gear. I was told the sound is normal. Hopefully this weekend I'll yank the drive off.

yes, lower unit gears meshing makes that sound
