Karma or Fate?

Last weekend my buddy and I were out duck hunting in the Delta near Antioch, CA. We were in my 12' Valco with a 9.9 Merc 2 stroke. I had just replaced the impeller (with the help of iboats.com forum--thank you) and the engine ran very well the whole day. As the sun set we packed up and headed back to the dock. About a mile from the dock and still on the far side of the main channel, the engine stopped dead. It would not start. Gas was squirting out of the carb, stuck needle valve. We stopped right next to a 25+ foot really nice boat. No offer to help or nothing. We didn't ask either. I got the oars out and started to row. We put the nav lights on and my buddy kept a strong flashlight handy to warn other larger boats. About 10 minutes into rowing, the nut came off the oar lock. Luckily it fell into the boat. I got it and put it back on. I rowed a little more gingerly for a while. As we got to the point where we had to cross the main channel, a 18/20 foot tri hull with a brand new (less than 2 hours) 300 HP V-8 started to circle near us. They were deciding where to go. They saw our light and asked if they could help. They towed us back to the ramp. Just as we got to the entrance, their engine died hard. Something to do with a valve being sucked through it or shot out of it or something. We were still in the current of the main channel so I got the oars back out and started to row the two boats backwards towards the ramp/dock against the current. 3 boats were at the dock watching. No one made a move to help. The lady of the boat I was towing very loudly and sarcasticly stated, "Don't bother helping or anything We'll get it." Still no offers to help. About 5 minutes into my towing using the oars, the oar broke again. I ended up paddling canoe style to get us out of the current. I guess all that time at the gym paid off---ha ha.

Once out of the current and tied off at the dock, I went to get the trailer. I waited for what seemed 20 minutes for the guy on the ramp to get out of the way. I finally got out of my truck and looked at the guy. He put his hands up in frustration. His vicisious little white dog had stepped on the door lock button with the keys inside and the motor running. Luckily he had not shut his drivers door all the way and my buddy and I were able to work together to pry the door open a little and reach in with one of the pole from my camoflage rig to hit the window button.

Did someone have bad karma or was it fate for us to break down, get help from someone who was headed 30 miles down the delta who then broke down at the ramp so we could help a guy who locked his keys in his car?

BTW, hunting was great that day and so was the sun set, but I'm still sore from the rowing. I have now oars now too and I got the motor fixed again with more help from the forum.

Holy cow Man!! You must have guns of steal! I'd help in a heart beat if I had my boat around. Maybe the peeps at the dock had nothing to offer (no boat). Or just there for the show. :)

I enjoy helping others, it just depends on the situation. I have found the majority of people on the water are generally worth helping.

Every now and then I pass people on the road with flat tires. There on the phone (ladies usually) and waiting for help. back 5-10 years ago I would pull over and help. It would take less time to change a tire than it would to wait for someone else to do it. Nowadays, I don't do on the road anymore. Too many people out to get you these days.

Hopefully the onlookers will catch on and apply what the saw.

Glad you had a nice outcome.

Everyone watching had boats, they just didn't bother to help. Typical of this area of California. One guy did move his boat either so we wouldn't possibly damage it or to make it easier on us to dock. Probably the former.

even when i was in my small 13.5' and 14' aluminum boats i always kept a trolling motor and a car battery in the boat ...............plus oars.

it sounds like fate to me.....................after all if it wasnt for you guys breaking down the people in the big boat would have really been in a mess.........not to mention the guy at the dock.

glad you back back safe!

It is pretty weird that you ended up keeping someone from launching off into the Thules, in a boat that was about to swallow a valve! As for all the boaters who wouldn't help, what can you say - they're losers.

I'm not sure whether your situation was kharma or fate, but I would say that you've got a little kharma in the bank at the moment!

The lake I frequent is full of AAA+++ personalities with their noses in the air. I typically don't judge people but this lake is known for that.

The other day, I was out and noticed about a 25' "go fast" I/O with the engine cover up and wisps of smoke coming out. So, I approached slowly, ready to help if I could. I was greeted with: "what the &^%$ do you want?" Get away from us. This all came from what I THOUGHT was a lady-guess not. No ladies I know talk like that.

The lack of common courtesy, in our society, has migrated to the waterways. A sad state.

What's next? "Water rage?":(

You said it bro!! I've lived in many placed including Colorado, East and North Bay Calif, Seattle area, Portland area, Salem area, Honolulu, Omaha, Las Vegas, and visited Japan and Kuiwait. You find all kinds in every location, but California has them all beat with people who don't want to get invloved or are too busy with their own lives to take a minute out of their schedule to help a fellow human. I stop and help anyone who appears to need it. Being a former EMT and firefighter, I can't help myself. I don't hesitate to call on sleepy or drunk drivers either. I consider that helping out the other's on the road who could be hurt or killed by their careless act. I am cautious when it comes to road side help in remote areas and late at night, but I will still do it. Common sense and gut feeling about any situation are good things to pay attention to. I have helped a couple people who have ended up keeping in contact with me and we have remained friends. If the situation is something I can't fix, a phone call or radio call is all it should take.

I'm ex-USCG and find that I have a similar personality. As I've mentioned in a number of threads, I volunteer to do SARs for a couple of agencies, when I can. It's not like I am doing it every five minutes, but if I have the time and think I can be of help, I do volunteer. I try to pick and choose a bit, so that I make sure that I don't end up trying to do something that is beyond the capabilities of my boat, but if I can assist I view the effort as a public service.

I also agree that there are tons of jerks on the water, who should probably be left to fend for themselves, but most of the time, the boat with the jerk skipper will have one or more other people aboard, who deserve a little help. SOmetimes when I assist, those are the folks that I'm really doing it for.

For you non-Californian, the Sacramento Delta is like a narrow river with a lot of cowboys with high speed boats. It is also some of the best fishing in North California. House boating is also extremely popular. There is even a lot of beaches for family day trips. The mix of people can lead to some strange stories, but I still have a hard time understanding why no one helped. Even cowboys like to be heroes and the Delta locals are just good-o-folk.

With the lack of compassion aside, I still am enjoying the visual of a person padding a boat towing another boat.

I have been around water a lot of my life and I always looked as marine people as decent people. Anyone in a boat knows that breakdowns are a matter of course. A working vessel is always suppose to help a crippled vessel.

Re: Karma or Fate?

Here are my observations. I have been around the lakes my entire life ( almost fifty years, and before anyone gets funny and asks about a cane I do have a couple due to a stroke:( ) back in the 60s and 70s people at the lake were there because they actually wanted to be at the lake. Sometime in the 80s and 90s it started changing and the population started to change to people who were at the lake because it was a status builder.
who knows meybe this depression will make these new people sell and people who actually like the lakes will be able to come back.
oh yeah last summer I gave three tows and needed one tow
