Took the family out boating yesterday. Launched out of Cottonwood Cove and since we have been all over the river north of there, all the way up to the dam, we decided to go south. What a big mistake.
Right where the lake narrows at the south end, about 3 miles north of Princess Cove. It was so congested, mostly with jet fleas. And nobody had any consideration for nobody. We were just cruising down towards the dam at about 10-15mph, taking in the landscape when we decided it was time for lunch. So we pull into a small cove (about 300' across by 600' deep or so), and anchor about a quarter of the way in and off to the side. So we start to have lunch and low and behold, here comes the jet flea's. Flying in and out, a few every couple of minutes or so. I'm thinking why don't they stay out in the channel if they want to fly, but no biggy, they were only slightly rocking the boat.
Well, guess what the next thing in was? A 21' bayliner pulling some kids on a tube. He's doing about 20 my guess and I'm wondering what he's thinking.
He passes us and went in another 200', does a hard turn to port. Now I'm thinking that tube isn't gonna be happy with that. Sure enough, they come swinging around and slap the walls of the cove.
Well at that point, I start reaching for my cell phone, watching him pull the kids/tube into the boat and I'm waiting to hear any crying. At that point, the wifey is jotting down his reg #'s. Now like I said, we were in the cove about 100' and off to the left about 75' from shore. After about 5 minutes here he comes. Full bore, right between me and the shoreline. Well I see him coming, stand up and start pointing at him to go around the other side. No response, he just keeps coming. By the time he gets up to me, he's doing about 15-20 and I give him a high five short of 4 fingers and giving directions verbally, if you catch my drift (pun intended)
Well after that, about 10 minutes later, guess who comes cruising in the cove? Yup, the good ole park rangers. They wave and I motion for them to come stop by. We told them what had happenend and gave them the #'s, exchanged some pleasantries and they thanked us as they pulled away.
Now a side note: We talked with the rangers for about 10 minutes and not one jet flea buzzed the cove.
Well after about another 30 minutes, we decided we'd had enough and we would make our way back up to Cottonwood to finish off the day.
Well right when we make it to where Mohave opens up on the south side, guess what we see? Yup, the ranger's had him pulled over, had him in their boat with the cuff's on (most likely DUI). So we pull within a 100', doing about 10 mph when one of the ranger's looks up, sees us and gives a thumbs up. We wave, making eye contact with the drunk jerk and head back up towards Cottonwood.
Sorry to be so long winded......But I thought I would share my experience.
Did I mention I will never, ever go back down there again?
