ok.......with the roving....you have a hand laid hull.

that means more than likely......the glass has de lamed a wee bit more than you think.....

grind that puppy till there is no seperation between the layers of fiberglass......you will see when you are grinding when you have got the de lam ground out.

now......dust off the area and clean with acetone.

take 2 layers of csm and glass that into place over the bare glass areas......
dont worry if its not flat like the hull of the boat. just get all the tiny air bubbles out.

now.....you say you are using a woving?.....how thick......if its really thin stuff......throw it away for now and use 1708 bi axe...
if you have thicker woven....when the csm is still wet...lay a woven over it..and make sure you get all the air out of it.
wait till that half cures and most of the heat has gone out of the cure.......

mix up some peanut butter.
this is special stuff im going to give you the recipy to
pour 200 ml of resin into a bucket.....add 4ml of MEKP.and stir well
now......quickly....about 500 ml of milled fiber powder....and 100 mil of 1/4 inch short strand chopped fibers.....
what you are trying to acheive is a 75% filler to 25% resin ratio.
before that stuff kicks off.......spread it on with a bondo spreader......that will make the hull flat....shape it how ever you need.
ok....wait till you have a partial cure...and agin most of the heat has gone from the cure.....then grind/sand off the rough areas or mistakes.

then lay another 2 layers of csm....

wait till that cures....then sand it flat

mix up a gellcoat paste...with milled fibers....this time ....instead of a 75/25 ratio.....you want this thinner....thinner than tooth paste....screed that stuff on to the repair area....wait till cure and sand flat.....then the final layer of gellcoat...sand and fair.

from the inside........grind off the top layer of wax of the old glass,,,,,,then add 2 layers of csm....one of woven....2 more of csm.....and done

this sounds like alot.......but the longest part is waiting the 20 mins for the resin to cure each application.......you cant do this one all at once....it will get too hot.

there ya go....
cheers

Welcome back oops. Just tell the gf that we need you around here. Just look above at the knowledge and know-how you bring to us when in need :)

Wow...advice straight from oops! Now I really feel like part of the family! Thanks for dropping in.

Believe it or not, I actually read the entire epic hull extension thread, although by the time I got to the end I forgot whatever was in the first five pages. Mostly something about drinking Corona, right? I'll go read them again.

I actually have two different types of roving....heavy (looks close to what Cobalt originally used), and too heavy to actually wet out by hand. I'm not sure why I'm keeping the latter around, or where the heck I got it.

Here's what concerns me:
by the time I get 2 CSM, roving, filler, and two more CSM, methinks I'll be WAYYY thicker than the rest of the hull.

I THINK I got all the delamination. I ground until the color was uniform and no loose fibers/chunks appeared.

The good news is that upon closer inspection/cleaning in the ski locker, there is another layer or two of roving on the other side of the CSM I uncovered with the grinder on the outside. I'll still be adding more in there, but at least a little bit of the original structure is intact.

then scrap the roving on the out side and just go with csm and filler.....use the roving on the inside

if the filler isnt too thick you can glass the whole shabang at once....if it gets too hot.....and you are worried about cooking the resin,......just dump a bag of ice cubes in the ski locker......

by the way.....i would have done that reapir for 700....so the marina was way out of line

uhhh. Now I remember why I didn't want to do this job. I may have to rename this boat the 7 year itch. My next boat will be aluminum.

Oh well....I got the layup done today, inside and out. Laying fiberglass upside down definitely adds a degree of difficulty. I had some resin kick early while wetting a piece of CSM; I went to go mix some more to finish it, and the piece fell onto the dirty floor:facepalm: wait.....grind....clean....try again.

All in all it looks good for an amateur. I still have a bit of fairing to do, and hope to get the gelcoat on tomorrow. The KeelGuard will be here Monday, and I should be good to go once I get that on. I'll try to remember to take some pictures tomorrow...I always get too wrapped up in the project and forget to document it.

Thanks again to everyone who commented for the help and encouragement.

Next time I'm just going to drive to BC and drop it off at oops' place.
