Keel/drain question.

Hey guys. The original design had a 1 1/4 pvc pipe as a deck drain running the length of the boat (red line in pic). I would like to know if I can eliminate it and add three 1 1/4 holes in in the stringers leading to the bilge (blue circles in pic ) and completely seal the deck. Or is the pvc needed as strength and does the deck need to have a drain. Thanks.

Well those aren't stringers, those are bulkheads and yes that would be fine. By the way it's recommended by the forum rules to keep your posts all in one thread!!!

Ayuh,.... 'tween the stringers, 'n bulkheads, you've got 11 "pockets",....

Each, 'n every Pocket should have Limber Holes, to drain all of the under-deck areas to the pumpable bilge area,.....
As there's No such thing as a perfectly sealed dry compartment possible,....

Sealed compartments, eventually get water in 'em, 'n rot yer barge,....
If All compartments can freely drain, it's easy enough to elevate the bow, remove the garboard plug, 'n keep the entire boat Dry, by natural drainage, while on the wagon,...

How do you keep the passages clear with poured foam? I am restoring my boat and have thought about drain holes.

This^^^ is the 64 MILLION DOLLAR question and has been debated Ad Infinitum on this forum. There are several creative ideas floating around but none that are definitive. You will need to do your own research and make your own decision on what method make the most sense to you. Personally I think that if you pour your hull full of flotation foam and then seal the deck properly. You don't really need to worry about drainage. A properly maintained boat shouldn't have problems with water below the deck. But that's just the opinion of an Old Dumb Okie!!!!
