does a keel guard have any negative effects like loss of power or sloppy handling?

Re: keel guard question

The expense is not the strip of rubber but the 3M adhesive to hold it on. :D

In case you missed it jaxsun I was only kidding. ;) I agree that Keelshield, as are all the keel protector products like it, is redicuously expensive.

To come back to the original question. I have installed one this year and have seen no negative effects. Fairly easy to put on and for the price, I consider it a good considering the peace of mind that I now have when beaching. Cheers!

Re: keel guard question

I have a keel protector on my 1991 Ranger and it runs to all specs. I find no negative effects and will never have a boat without one again. I run in shallow waters and occasionally beach my rig.

Re: keel guard question

I used to sell Keelshields and all of my customers loved them. Here is some info from their site:

Will KeelShield Keel Protectors affect the performance of my PWC or powerboat?

Boats will notice no effect on either speed or handling. PWC tests have shown that KeelShield protectors may increase the speed of your PWC slightly and increase the tracking ability.
Re: keel guard question

Stay away from Tech5 Keel Guard. I purchased some on eBay from TrackerMarine and the factory will not honor the warranty unless they are installed by an authorized dealer. Mine would not stay on the boat. I took it off and installed the MegaWare brand and I have not had any problems.

Re: keel guard question

also is it worth it to spend the extra 100 bucks to get the "keel shield" brand rather than the less expensive "keel guard"?

Re: keel guard question

I can not help you with that. How expensive a boat are you protecting? Good luck.

Re: keel guard question

I put keel guards on both the boat (19 feet) and PWC (Seadoo GTX). Have not noticed any differences in performance. Both have been on for 3 years, no issues. Take note, some "keel guards" are not recommended for PWC's. For that application make sure you have one that is OK for them. As others said the only problem is $150 for an item that should be priced about $60 or less.
