Does any one know what kind of sealent was used in the factory or what a good replacement would be. I had a spot welded from the outside and it just cooked the inside.

Gluvit is the answer to your leak, it is what we all use and works like a charm.

We don't know exactly what it is, but most of us left it in place since it's tough to remove.

Seems like you managed to find a way. Gluvit will work well to fill voids and adhere well to bare metal, as Glen mentioned earlier. Great product.
