Keep burning up impellers, 3 changed

Hello

We are going thru impellers very quick, about 3 in two months. Sea strainer is clean. And diver said the water intake hole is clean. All hoses are not soft and collapsing.

The water pump itself have a small leak out of the back portion with the 4 spaces. Just a drip but it does get worse with RPM increase, but not squirting ,just a drip. Also the housing has wear on the cover and the back part of the housing.

We just replaced the cam and cover as well.

What would cause premature failure of these impellers?

I'm having trouble finding a replacement pump for less than $560.

The drip is causing you to lose prime. So your starting it dry every time.

Hello

TAMD41P-A 200HP Volvo Penta Inboard, straight shaft.

I think the pump is shot, has s circular groove worn into the back wall of the pump. Also has a small drip from the shaft o-ring/seal. Some one here said they might think the pump is loosing it's prime overnight cause us to dry start it every morning. What else do you think it could be?

Howdy,


Most engine driven raw water pumps are close to or below the water line. They don't lose prime because the water is "right there".

You may have enough of a leak for it to draw air into it though....

Did you rebuild it completely using the OEM rebuild kit?
