So I am on the phone to make an offer and the boat literally was sold and hour ago! Bummer, but as my wife said, there are more boats in the sea....anyway, there are a couple more 175's I am interested in. One a 04 and one an 06. Were there any differences in the years or are they still pretty much the same boat?
anyone, anyone, bueller?

Re: keep missing out...!!!

Where are you currently looking? Okanagan? Lower Mainland? How far are you willing to go to get one? Do you know anyone at all with a driveway in Washington State or Idaho? (family, friends or?)
A friend of mine in Langley was looking for a good family ski-boat and everything newer, local and reasonable in the lower mainland was 15K-ish...and more. I found a 2000 4-winns bowrider on line for him with a 4.3litre (190hp) and a waketower for $8500-9000 in Utah. He brought it back about 1-1/2 months and it looks great. He would never have found that kind of deal locally...yet. The drive down and back took him 1-2 days total, but it's long forgotten, money saved and money in the bank on the buying end of things.
Keep us posted.

:DAs the man says - Look South. Got my 1990 Capri with 3.0L Merc last year south of the line for about 1/2 price of what I would North of the 49th. Good selection in Seattle and surrounding area, suggest you take a look on Craigslist. Being in Merrit I assume you are looking in the Okanagan, have not been impressed with the used market there either. Depending on what you want to spend you may even what to consider new. Dropped into a Bayliner dealer on the way south last year and was pleasantly suprised at the cost of a new 175.

Remember is you buy in the US you will pay GST at the Customs, no duty on a NAFTA made boat, PST can be collected with trailer registration, boat will need to be licensed through Service Canada, think that is free, and will need Canadian Capacity Plate if not equipped, once again a few papers to fill in and about a $5 fee. Good luck and happy hunting, we love our new Capri

...good approach Dal, sounds like you are on it. Here is another tip for the heck of it. If you look further inland towards Nevada, Idaho, Utah, etc you run a better chance of finding a 'fresh water' boat/motor rather than a possible salt water boat. Not guaranteed of course...but improved chances.
I recently came across a local used 175 bayliner for sale ('05 w/a 135hp i/o) here on Vancouver Island .....and they want $16,000. Hilarious....a new one is now less than that. However they want the next buyer to help them recoup their original investment not seeming to understand that the market doesn't work that way.
I think the local boat dealers are clueing in to the advantage of shopping these out of the States...but it seems to be still somewhat lost on the hopeful private sellers.
Interesting economic times for both the U.S and Canada lately.

Dalman, just take your time and let the boat come to you. If you are in a rush then chances are you make a poor decision on purchasing either a piece of junk or an overpriced vessel.

Personally, again this is my view....... If I were looking for a capri 1950 or lower I would absolutely choose one with the 4 cylinder 3.0 package and not the 4.3.

Many will argue with me about the power difference but the economical advantages, along with the ease of repairs make it very attractive for families / boaters looking for a boat that will not break a fine budget.

For the record I have a 1950 Capri with the 3.0 that I cruise with and also ski, and pull tubes all day long for $45... :D

Also have the crownline cruiser that I can do the same for only $450

Here is a great place for helpfull advice in regards to Bayliners. Absolutely great knowledgable people.

Billbayliner made some really good points. Quite true, give it some time and the right boat will come to you. It is a good time to be shopping right now, post Christmas bills coming in, boat been sitting there since last fall, something will work out.

I also have to agree with the 3.0l combo. I am very pleased with the power and economy of mine. Just moved up from a 14ft tin boat with a 30 hp yamaha outboard. I am probably burning 15% more fuel, but going twice as fast with twice the capacity, in comfort. With a light load, that is 2 people and 1/2 tank we got up to 42MPH on the GPS. With 6 adults and full tank it is a bit more sluggish, hard to get up on a plane. Most of the time we are with 3-4 adults and a kid, no problem, lots of speed, can still pull a tube or wakeboard with good results.

Can you explain further the forms needed to obtain a Canadian capacity plate. I have bought a used Bayliner 185 in the States and will bring it up once the Ottawa ice melts. I want to get the plate ahead of time. Thanks.

...Canadian capacity plate? I've no idea what that is or how that implies to importing a boat. However maybe you are referring to some sort of compliance paper?
Anyways, what you need is the following:
1) correct ORIGINAL title (no photocopies...period) for the boat and the trailer.
2) written/signed/dated bill of sale from the seller with the full price stated and their contact information (no scraps of paper stuff)
3) A good idea, along with the bill of sale, is a full written description of what was purchased and include the motor if it is an outboard. This document should include ALL relevant serial no's...boat/trailer/motor.

With that in hand....you're good to go. Remember get all of the paperwork correct and organized and have it ready to go. When you hit the border they will hit you with GST, based on the sell price converted to Canadian dollars.:(
You pay provincial sales tax locally when you take the boat in to register it in your home province.
You, as well, will have to have the trailer inspected by a legitimate company for general road worthiness. Canadian Tire is in Cahoots with the Registrar of imported vehicles and will take care of this for you.
After that is done, you take the paperwork in and they will give you Canadian registration which is what you will need to insure the boat.
Good Luck & keep us posted on your deal
....by the way, what kind of boat etc is it?
BP:cool:
