Keeping the LU exhaust drain clean? ('63 40hp)

I read a couple of posts that mentioned reaming out the exhaust drain while servicing a LU, so I worked on that last night. Not an easy job in this case. It probably took me over two hours. There was so much carbon packed so tightly at the bottom of that cavity that I actually found a diamond at the bottom. (RIMSHOT!)

How tough is it going to be to keep that clear once it's all assembled? Will a gentle reaming of the hole after each outing be enough?

Do you do a lot of slow trolling? It sounds like you are running a little on the rich side. Run some Sea Foam mixed in your fuel. that will help eliminate the build up. In the mean time make sure you are using the right spark plugs and getting good even fire to both of your cylinders

Are you talking about that drain hole near the prop? Well I guess it is a case of durned if you do and durned if you don't. People complain if goo runs out the hole, and then complain if it gets plugged up. Unless you live where it freezes, don't worry about it. Probably 90% of them around here are plugged with sand, salt, and who-knows-what.

I just acquired this motor and am going through it so I don't know anything about the way it was run previously.

How much SeaFoam do you use? I was actually thinking about using MMO in the fuel, but I know others opt for SF.

Well, like you always say, it's there for a reason, right? And, yes, I live in northern MN and there's already been frost just north of us, so it's going to freeze, alright.

Thanks!

Well I guess it comes with the territory.

I suppose you could blow back through it with compressed air, every now and then, to keep it open.

Northern Minnesota? Holy crap. You definately want to make sure that there is NO standing water left in that motor and all the drains are clear. It gets cold enough there to freeze your snot in your mustache

Yes, in January it takes a long time to chop a hole in the ice big enough to get the boat in.
