I have a 1969 Merc 1000. It is thunderbolt ignition 100hp. Had it rebuilt last week, Took it out this past weekend.Got towed in twice. It would not remain running after putting the throttle down, then it would become hard for it to stay running. The service guy rec. 32:1 gas/oil. That seemed to fowl the plugs. Took those out, cleaned. Then went and got clean gas and a guy told me to run it at 100:1 for awhile. It ran great. Later in the day, took it out and it all started again. Only this time it seemed to help to have some one constantly squeeze the primer bulb. The battery runs down from having to start it so much. Any clues/thoughts. Should I try a new fuel line/bulb?
This engine is on a 17' cobia cuddy.

Thanks,
Pam

I would never run it leaner than 50:1 more oil will only foul the pugs less can seize the motor, hole a piston, not a good idea.

I'm sure plenty of others will chime in, too, but whoever gave you the 100:1 advice should be shot. You're essentially breaking in a new motor, and if anything, you need to be running DOUBLE the oil, not HALF. That would be 25:1 - i think my service manual says to do this for the first ten hours.

It sounds as if you need to have your carbs adjusted, fuel system checked for vaccuum/leaks, and your timing checked and reset, assuming there's no damage from the 100:1. A wise man once said "A 2-stroke runs the absolute best five minutes before it blows up"
