I have a mercury 1980 2cyl 40hp motor that has been my little project lately and I recently am having trouble keeping it running unless I pump the primer bulb every 4 to 5 seconds. I have replaced ALL of the fuel line from tank to fuel pump to engine. I noticed my bulb does not stay squeezed in after priming it, does this mean Im sucking unwanted air or is this ok? Is my fuel pump bad, how do i tell?

Also in addition to this problem I have just replaced the impeller but never had a good stream from pee hole. Now after only 30 minutes of run time I dont have any stream from pee hole again. (I only replace the impeller and not the pump housing) Are these issues connected? BTW I dont think I completely overheated my motor but came close once or three times....how bad is that, are they somewhat durable?

... my fuel pump bad?..

Probably! A fuel pump diaphrag kit is cheap (+/- 15$) and it's easy to do.

Holy crap! Please check you compression first...

Did your overheat alarm ever beep? Are you able to put your hand on the powerhead while it run?
