They were intended for third world countries. Our own navy does not use gas powered outboards. Anyway that was supposed to be the intent. Every thing was to use the same fuel source. No gasoline on naval craft. If that ever came into being, I don't know.

actually the USN has outboards that burn gasoline,kerosene,JP5and diesel.
we also have dewatering pumps using a basic 50 HP omc block that burn gas or JP5.
but yes in some 3rd world areas that have bad gasoline issues the standard is kerosene.
BRP has released a few multi fuel engines in the past couple years that look cool but are rather pricey.
USN also has gas outboards that can be launched from underwater and when surfaced pump a knob,blow the water out of everything, fire it up and go.

The kerosene motor was for export only, it's not the Navy multi-fuel engine that was recently in the news

The export motor had 2 fuel systems. It had to be started and warmed up with gasoline, then a valve switched it over to kerosene. In Europe, gasoline was very expensive but kerosene was cheap.

If I remember correctly, it was first produced in the late 1960's based on the 18-20hp engine design.

I've heard stories of old OMC 6hp motors being run on diesel in third world countries. I have no way of confirming this, but have heard it from a number of otherwise reliable sources. Given the lack of both gasoline and diesel outboards in many places, it wouldn't surprise me if this were true.

Well I have learned from this thread. I have however heard about the underwater launch mentioned. But that was all.

I have rebuilt several of the underwater launch motors in years past.
some of the parts had to be custom made such as milling the piston area under the wristpin for water draining and the pump valving assy for dewatering isnt avalible to the public but its not bad.
the EP250 dewatering pumps we had on the USS Arliegh Burke were started on propane then switched to JP5 as we carried no gasoline onboard. plenty of JP5 to feed three allison gensets and 4 LM2500 turbines but no gasoline.
the military gets some cool stuff as do some developing nations.
saw my first kerosene engines in Venezuela.
kerosene isnt as affected by long term storage or exposure to humidity and water so its prefered in the jungles or other remote areas that dont have ready access to a gas station.
it just stinks though.
