Key Largo, beaches?

This spring we will be heading to FL for a week. One of the things my son and I were going to go was head to Key Largo for some snorkeling. My 4 yr daughter is too young to snorkel, so my wife thought they would just hit a beach that day.

The problem is, she heard that there aren't any sand beaches on Key Largo. Does anyone have any experience there? I could find much on the net that was definitive. Thanks.

I was down there twice in the last two years. I don't really remember if there were sand beaches or not, but there are a few beaches. Theres plenty of other things to do also if that doesn't work out. P.S. The snorkeling is insane! it was one of the coolest experiences ever! Are you going on the reef? Definitely buy a disposable underwater camera if you don't have another underwater camera.

The state park on BAHIA HONDA has very nice sandy, secluded beaches. If you bring a boat, there is a neat GILLIGANS ISLAND type key right off shore. I forget how far down it is but well worth a day trip. FRED

We are planning on taking one of the guided tours near John Pennekamp State Park out to the reefs.

Vandy, thanks for the tip about the underwater camera. I hadn't thought much about that.

Re: Key Largo, beaches?

A family friend lives on Largo and I have never seen a beach...all mangroves. The Holiday Island Sandbar may not be a family destination either. My old man lives in Islamorada (specifically Metecumbe key). there is a beach on the bay side on either lower or upper Metecumbe, I forget which one. While visiting my Dad I would take my morning jog to it. I dont know if its private or not.

its only about 15-20 miles from Largo. Bahia Honda is maybe another 30 miles towards Key West. Well worth the drive if you have the time. Great for a little keiki to swim and play in the protected lagoon area.
