So I have a AQ125a volvo in my 84 Bayliner

What is happening after I drive across a lake and I shut it off it will not restart until it cools off.

It will not fire when cranking ,but the second I let go of the key - it will start.
I am thinking the run circuit has no power while cranking.

I removed the key switch and tested it with a meter and it checks out ok .
I might have to run power threw the key for awhile , then retest it .

Almost sounds like a coil ,but the engine should shut off on it's self , when it gets hot.

Besides the key switch is there any thing else I can look at .

Not sure if you have one, but it sounds like the ballast resistor is bad.

when was the last time you serviced the points?

i just put in a set of points ,Starts up really good when cold and idles smooth and runs smooth wide open.
I have noticed this also last season. Fires up as soon as you let go of the key .

So where do you find the Ballest resister and how does it look like ,what is the size of it .

So What I have been taught ,a Ballist resistor drops voltage to your coil while running.
But when cranking it needs more power as your starter will drop the battery voltage.

So how does it bypass the resister while cranking on these AQ125 .
I did notice on the starter there are two male spade terminals.
one is not being used.
should this one be wired to the coil ?
Can some one look at theirs and let me know if theirs is wired this way.

This is a common problem because Bayliner did not use the genuine Volvo wire harness. Take a close at the starter solenoid, there is a spade connection on the solenoid that is not used. Make up a wire that connects to the spade and connect the other end to the + or bat side of the coil. Now you will have voltage to the coil when cranking.
