This memory sticks will me well, though it was a good 25 years ago. A lake near Estes Park, CO (name escapes me) that had a big public floating dock right in the middle of the lake....the perfect location to use as a base for people to waterski from.

I'm sitting on the dock waiting my turn, taking in the sun. Another boater comes by with a bunch of people, drops a couple off, starts to idle away. Then he turns around and yells at his wife "Hey, put these somewhere safe for me!" and immediatly his car keys are hurdled through the air toward us, thrown only about 10 feet higher than anyone could reach on the dock, not to mention the element of surprise from lack of warning.

We all watch helplessly as they sail well out of anyone's reach right over the dock and plunk! Sink like a rock. One kid jumped immediately and dove for them, but couldn't catch them. Depthfinder indicated about 30 feet there.

Nobody had spares handy, and they had traveled over 200 miles to boat at this lake today, and now they were stranded. Remember this is long before cell phones were around. They got a ride to the nearest pay phone, called a locksmith to rekey their car on-site, and enjoyed a day of boating anyway while they waited for the locksmith to arrive and do his deed. And he COULDN'T BLAME IT ON THE WIFE!

My wife thought she was smart and put a little float thing on our truck keys. I tried it out this weekend and there are to many keys on there to float.....I tried it this weekend. Luckily it was shallow water.

My wad of keys require another battery be placed on the opposite side of the boat!

As soon as I get into my boat, I have a orange float container and I put my wallet, truck keys, cell phone and anything else I do not want to get wet in there.
I've seen it way too many times, I think I am prepared.

I had one of those lanyard type keychains that hung out of my pocket. All weekend long (two weeks ago) it had been catching on the lifelines, but for some reason I never tucked it in. Finally it caught, pulled completely out, and I got to watch them go in and under as we cruised past. No more lanyards for me.

OK, So I was involved in a Half-a-stupid Human Trick. We somehow dropped one ignition key over the side, at the gas dock. Since the boat was twin screw, we came home on one engine.

We had spares at home! Also, if it would have been far, i would have hot-wired the other motor.
