i'm installing my first keyswitch on my first boat-my question is,in the instructions-they say to"connect the cable from the magneto to one "m" terminal and the other "m" terminal to the electrical ground system"-which magneto wire should i connect-the upper or the lower coil-the upper coil is attached to the cutout switch-and which is the electrical system ground wire?my diagram shows both magneto wires to the keyswitch and everything is grounded to the junctoin box or motor-am i misinterpreting the directions?should i follow my diagram?it is my first so stupid questions will happen-any help appreciated

Re: keyswitch question

jet....would help to know what engine we are wiring the switch to.....but it does sound like an OMC/BRP engine. There may be one black wire and a black wire with a, I wanna say yellow stripe...or a stripe of some color. It really dosen't matter which "M" on the key switch the black wires goes to. When these wires are shorted together, the engine stops. The solid black goes to ground....the other black comes from the ignition. Follow the directions on the diagram.

PS....there are NO stupid questions here on the iboats forums........if there is......I asked them... :D :D

Re: keyswitch question

The easy way I found as I just wired a switch is to test the wires. The ground wire will read 0 ohms and the + will read 1.2+meg ohms. :) Simple but I had the wire laying in the boat.

Heres what i did I left the battery out and connected 1 wire of the meter to the battery negative terminal. The wire your testing connects to the other side of the meter. Thats where the long wire came in handy.

Re: keyswitch question

my apologies-it is for a 61 evinrude larkiii-40hp-so if i understand correctly,i connect both black coil wires to both m terminals on keyswitch?does this mean they are automatically grounded to the system?i have no wiring on boat whatsoever-and only have about 6 inches of original wiring harness-i will need to crimp new wires to solenoid then to keyswitch-new battery and new terminals all around-the grounds shown on diagram are on junction box and motor only-are there more on boat itself?thanx for all info
