Greeting, I am thinking about adding a second motor to my 16' 1986 Bayliner Capri as back up/ fishing motor. Could you tell what is the right motor size? I read here people saying 5 or 6 hp is good enough. Usually there will be 3 (adults )of us fishing. secondly should i get a shortshaft or L/S? Thank you!

Re: Kicker for Bayliner Carpi

You need a reserve of power in case you end up going against a current or against the waves in rough water, or if you are heading upwind.

As for the shaft length a lot would depend on how you planned to mount the motor.

Once upon a time I used a 5 HP as a backup. Nowadays my 16' boat has a 9.8 HP kicker and your boat weighs more than mine does. No way would I go back to using a 5HP.
