I have a 270 Sea Ray Sundancer. I want to put a outboard Kicker moter on it. I can't decide on a 9.9 hp. or a 15 hp.outboard. I want to use it for trolling and also a back-up motor. Will a 9.9 hp. be strong enough to power this size of Boat dealing with river currents and offshore boating ?

Sundancer
On a rig that size, I would go for the 15 HP, especially if you plan on using it for back-up in an emergency. Make sure you get the correct shaft length for your boat. A 15 will be a good all around troller and back-up for your needs. Good Luck,

I vote for the 15, too. To move a boat that big, you may also want to consider a "high thrust" prop, usually 4-bladed.

Sundancer
I have a 21 foot Aluminum runabout and have a 15 HP kicker with the 4 blade high thrust and it works very well but if it was not for weight I would go with a 25 or 30.
With the 15 can troll so slow that lures will not work so no reason to go smaller. The 15 is the same weight as a 9.9 but has more power. I have a 1975 Johnson. With the 4 blade hight thrust prop has twice the back up power, Important for me offshore when drift fishing and useing motor to slow drift by backing into the wind and swells. If out at Cordell Banks (26 miles out) if I had to come in from there 15 is barely enough. I dont know about you but I do not like to run any motor at FULL throttle for 5 hour to get in so even more power would be my choice if could find a Kicker bracket to put it on.

Sundancer
If you see a Blue 21 foot Crestliner please do not run into it. May be above the fog but get our Smog, are farther from the Delta, Bay and Ocean. We get the Delta winds first.
Take care and have fun with your boat.
