Re: Kids and texting !

Personally I don't text a whole lot. On my work phone I never text, always e-mail, corporate IM, and gee whiz, using it as a phone too! On my personal phone I text a bit, some days not at all, other days maybe a couple. Only to communicate plans with folks who can't talk for whatever reason. Personally I find it easier to just talk on the phone. Takes a fraction of the time to say waht I want to type it on a number pad.

Anyhow, I'll let you guys in on a little secret... Text messages don't cost the carrier anything to transmit. 100% of what you pay for text messaging is pure profit for your carrier. Don't believe me?

Re: Kids and texting !

guess i'm late again for the discussion. oh well. myself. i've never texted anyone. i don't know why ya would if ya have a phone in your hands. just seems easier to call and talk with someone to me. as for my kid. i never got my kid a phone. he had to buy his own. and pay for it. i co signed for it. but that's as far as i'll go. i made it real clear to him too. i ain't paying for any of it, and if i did. i'd have his phone. i've never had any problems, yet. probably won't, he's had a phone since he was 16 or 17 and now he's 19 and has been out of the house for about a year. so far so good.
i don't know how much texting my boy does. but when he's doing it in my presence. i think it's rude. he'll kinda be talking with me, but concentrating on the text jazz. it's like, hey man, put that thing down so i can have your full attention.
this electronic age is getting out of hand too. a gps in my phone to locate ME. who needs to locate me by gps... i don't want to be found. while the cell phone age has been a real good thing for me in running a one man show for a service business. the day i stop working (though i'm not sure that day will ever come), will be the day i won't have to have a cell phone... ah, that'll be the day i'm looking forward too.. i also feel that these new electronic things are a way for someone to keep track of me, chart my every move for profiling me. the faster we move into high tech, the more i want to resist.. i don't like it and don't plan on conforming if i can help it...

I do very few highly dangerous things nowadays. But i do go on the water a lot during the summer.

It's a big ocean and as we all know anything can happen.

Say i don't check in after a day on the water, and it's dark out for a hour believe me thats unusual.

Come around 9 -10 pm i bet my wife would have tried calling me a 100 times.

Thats when the gps in the phone will allow the authorities to locate me.

If i go on the water with buddies and we plan on staying late then i'll tell her.
If we decide to stay late after we are on the water i'll call her.

Say i go on a hunting trip, with buddies, we split up but we know when and where to meet up, i don't show up by dawn, then it's time to call the authorities if they can't find me.

Never happened yet, but it could.

I always have what i need with me in the woods to spend the night, a good knife, a good lighter, and my gun, i can make it thru, won't be comfortable, but i'll make it thru if im conscious.

i won't argue about the safety of having a cell phone on the water chief. i even used mine last summer to get assistance. 1st time i've needed help and was very nice to have a telephone on board... i still question about the gps though. with dsc and a vhf i feel i'm covered. as for being disabled and finding me via my phone... i'm still thinking about that... i don't go into the ocean like many here do.... so for me, that's a non issue. the lakes around here just ain't big enough that ya couldn't find me i don't think. even on the missouri river, which is the most desolet that i go. i still think i could be found if someone really wanted to find me.. if i go into these places i just use a float plan. someone will call the authoritys and will know generally where to look..
like i said, my feeling is that electronics in general are becoming too intrusive into my life and i'd just soon do w/o... it sure is a new world out there from the 60's and 70's when i grew up.. whew..

Zig i don't wish you never to be in position to have to use a phone for a emergency.

I leave mine on when i leave the house. Turn it off when i get home. The gps is built in. Can't turn it off even if i wanted to.

Hell i had to be pulled kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Me i would have been happy living in the 18-19th century.

Things have changed for the good and bad. Back then a man was judged on how his word held up. Now you need a lawyer to go to the bathroom.

Re: Kids and texting !

Had a 2 day visitor last weekend....female....single....under 60...nice person...
All evening her phone went 'off' with a stupid ring tone, to which she always said "oh, that'll be a text for me".
She would answer-receive it while carrying on a conversation with the rest of us at the dinner table, then disappear into the kitchen 'for privacy' as she called it....so she could send a reply.
After about 2 hrs we got jack of it, and just ignored her, which was a bit unfair on the wife as she had to play 'the friend'.
This is what I hate about mobile phones and texting.....most users are ignorant, rude and selfish.
Cheers

Me i see her as rude, could have turned the phone off, or on vibrate. Woa no vibrate jokes and wemon please hah.

She wanted the attention on her. Wasn't for the phone she would find some other way to draw attention to HER.

It's the same as someone coming very late to dinner, they wanted people talking about THEM, waiting for THEM.

I invite people over for say a 7 pm dinner, thats when we sit and eat 7 pm.

They come at 8 pm they can eat the leftovers.
