I just purchased one of these motors cheap but it seem like I have a problem with serial # ....... the swivel bracket was not attached to the motor when I picked it up but I did get one and it does fit??? The problem is that it has a serial # on it that would be for an 850, anyone know if that is possible????

I'm thinkin that when the young lad took the motor off his boat he did it the easy way by removing the pin and left the swivel bracket on the boat then was too lazy to put this one on the boat when he went to an 85hp.

Would like to get a manual & parts list for this, decals on it say 100 hp 6 but.... should have ser# first I suppose to be able to order any parts ....if I can find what I need.

About the only diff between the 85 HP and 100 HP versions of that motor (providing they were both the 90 C.I. model) were the carbs and maybe an internal exhaust baffle. Back in the day I turned an old 850 into an 1000 by swapping parts.

Everything else is pretty much identical. So it's certainly conceivable that someone played "mix-n-match" with your motor's parts.

I'm thinkin' that a Seloc manual which begins with 1965 models would work in your application; the tuneup info for a '65 Merc 1000 would be pretty much the same as your '62/'63'

You should be able to look parts up for your motor at this site:

Here's a site with much good info on your motor:

Re: Kiekhaefer Merc 1000 62 - 63 interchange parts

Thank you very much, I bought this motor not because I need it but it was close and the price was right, if I get it to run it will sure give the LOML some peace that I am not really Koo Koo.

Don't know if this is common or not but when finally getting the motor onto a homemade stand I found that the spark plugs were only finger tight and the seller told me the engine ran but didn't seem stable enough to rely on out on the open water, ran rough ?? wonder why.

A couple of the gentlemen that I work with told me they had same trouble with Merc Mariner & NKG plugs backing out if they didn't disconnect the fuel line after boating ..... after 4 trips to the maine shop they think they found the problem to be fuel pressure from not disconnecting the gas after use, any ideas?

Thanks also for the links.

I can't conceivably see how any kind of fuel pressure would make the spark plugs back out! Maybe if the cylinder was full of raw fuel and cranking the engine over caused the spark plug to blow out its threads, but that's a tad extreme, eh? :$

More likely is that the plugs were not properly tightened down. Some folks have a feel for how tight they should be, others should probably use a torque wrench !

If you're experienced at it you can feel the 'crush' of the sealing washer and have a pretty good idea how tight to get, but of course a torque wrench would be more accurate.

The top and bottom plugs can be quite difficult to get at, which can lead to under-tightening. There's a special spark plug socket you can purchase that'll get into the tight spots on #1 and #6. I have a 13/16" combination wrench with short 90 deg bends in it that works perfectly on these plugs.

And it's not a bad idea to check the plugs periodically, because they can eventually loosen from thermal cycling and vibration.

BTW make sure you have the correct spark plugs in there; Champion J4C or Autolite 353, to list a couple of readily available brands.
