I have a 86 johnson 50hp and I am having issues shutting it down. The key switch every now and then was not shutting off the motor so I inspected it and found semi loose screws holding down the wires. This maybe was the problem but I can't test until I get out in the water.

Also I tried to test my kill switch (which never works) by doing a continuity test with my meter before and after pulling the emergency cord but it always beeps when connecing to M on the ignition.

Does anyone know where I can get s schematic of my ignition and kill switch and some troubleshooting tips? Thanks.

Re: Kill switch and Ignition shut off issues.

The not shutting off is a yellow/yellow-black wire, check by the big red plug, if that wire isn't making contact somewhere the motor won't shut off, you actually reminded me that I need to fix mine as I have the same problem but keep forgetting.

The first time I had a problem was after undoing the big red plug, ended up jumping the plug and just using standard crimp on connectors and new wire.

You may want o inspect all your wires under the hood, after 23 years some of them may be getting a little tired.
