What are you trying to kill?

Usually 2 or 4 stroke has nothing to with a kill switch. The type of ignition system used is the determining factor.

To kill a 2 stroke motor the Magneto is grounded
To kill a 4 stroke motor 12V is removed from the coil

2 stroke
Note the M terminals goes to the Magneto. One of the M's connects to ground. When key is turn OFF it grounds the connection. Same thing happens when the kill switch is pulled
Johnson Evinrude wiring.jpg

4 stroke
Power goes to the coil thru the kill switch. When kill is pulled it removes power. Note the purple coming from the key goes thru the kill then to gauges and back to the motor

2016 mercury 150 4 stroke

No

Your mixing 2 cycle and 4 cycle

Need a bit more clarification to make sure what your doing. Reason is because if the boat is a 2016 then the control and wiring will match and should already have a kill switch. Your asking so my guess (using my pea brain) is we are not working on the same thing

If you had a 2 cycle and replacing with 4 cycle then need some wiring changes.

The purple from the key supplies power to the motor. Need to cut the purple and place the kill in between the cut wire. Like a light switch

Ok thank you. The boat is a 2005 and it had a 2 stroke but I replaced the harness and motor from a 2016 boat with a 4 stroke

Then you should be good with making the kill switch normally closed (NC) so when its pulled it opens (disconnects power) to the motor

Ok did what was suggested .still didn’t work . I had posted earlier that with the key off , I am getting 7 to 10 volts on my gauges ground wire. Someone suggested it was the kill switch. I either misunderstood or didn’t hook up right

OP has two boats, one with a 2-stroke, one with a 4-stroke outboard. pulled motor and gauges from one boat and put on the other

found out here

the issue is a 2-stroke has a completely different key switch and MOB switch than a 4-stroke.

gauge wiring will be similar.

have to pull factory manual for both engines and start tracing. best if you move the whole wiring harness and controls over with the motor
