Kill switch not working

I guess I should be happy, most people cant get thier engine to start, I cant shut mine off. I istalled a lanyard/push button kill switch a couple of years ago and it worked great. All of a sudden the the switch will not shut the engine off. Even if I disconect both of the wires going to the kill switch, the engine will start and run. Ive got to choke it to shut it off. One of the wires goes to ground on the water jacket cover, the other wire goes to through a wire harness to the cdi controll. I replaced both of the wires with new connections as the insulation of the old wires was shot, still same issue. Its a 81 35hp Evinrude govt motor, with electric start. Any ideas?

Re: Kill switch not working

The kill switch simply grounds out the cdi unit.Disconnect the wire going to the cdi and touch to a good ground with the engine running. If it shuts off you have a bad switch.

No dice, disconect the cdi wire from the kill switch, motor runs, touch the same wire to ground, motor still runs. Something telling me that portion of the cdi is going out. There is some voltage coming from the wire out of the CDI, its bit me a couple of times so far.

If you are grounding out the black/yellow wire coming directly out of the CDI pack it sounds like pack troubles if it won't shut off.

Re: Kill switch not working

If you have continuity thru the kill switch itself, then obviously the switch is okay.

The is a black ground wire leading from the powerpack to a powerhead ground. Make sure that wire is okay and secure (corrosion at ground bolt).
