Can anyone tell me if my OMC control box which came with Evinrude engine of 1984, (looks part of original equipment )would have kill switch, there are several items on box, ignition switch, warm up lever on top, round knob below this and another round flatter one but don't see anything like kill switch? this control box is single lever! if it is a white box, then it SHOULD have a lanyard style kill switch, where you attach the red plastic cord and when you pull it out, it kills the motor.

looks like this?? :
control box

Re: Kill switch on OMC control box?

Many thanks for reply, where would such a switch be on the box? near ignition switch on front or side where control lever goes into box? there are some controls on box but as I have never seen one I don't know what I'm looking for? I only got ignition key from seller, wonder if I should open box up, but don't want to drag thinks apart that are working, I suppose the colour of box would be cream/faded white, think it has OMC emblem on centre of handle? but will confirm! Re: Kill switch on OMC control box?

Thank you Myoutboards for reply and picture, I had better look at it, round centre of control lever is chromed circle with OMC spaced 3 times, wonder if that description dates it any? position where kill switch should be is missing so presume it has been taken of as the system operates OK, I am certain that here in UK they must be fitted so will have to look into this as well, I would imagine its function is to cut off ignition when key or whatever is pulled out? thanks for now, will attempt to find part. Re: Kill switch on OMC control box?

Lurcher, when I bought my 78 motor, it came with an older OMC control box - which is like yours, with no cut-out switch. I was in bad shape and cables way too long, so I bought a reconditioned OMC box with new cables - and this one does have the switch, so there are two types and you have the older one. When I opened my old box, it didn´t seem like it could be easily modified with a switch, so that was another reason for me to buy a new one.

The main difference between the boxes are the switch, and the new box is slightly thinner and more angular - like the myoutboards´box on the photo - old one is bulker and rounder, which is what you have.

I don´t know if there are any regulations in the UK on this, but I think it´s an important safety feature and an absolute must if you are ever alone on your boat.
FYI - I have found Ebay a good source for this kind of stuff, and so far, I´ve only been messed around with once...

The safety cut-out switch has attached plastic clip that cuts out the motor when the clip is pulled off the switch - by a short lanyard that is clipped to your clothes or arm.

Re: Kill switch on OMC control box?

Lurcher, was flipping through Ebay.uk and came across a new OMC Control box - item no is 4593062691 and although the kill switch looks like it´s in a different location than on mine, it looks like it´s there, as you can see the red safety lanyard. Of course I have no idea what price it will end up at, but check it out...

I ended up paying over $200 for mine from USA - it was reconditioned with new cables though, but this one is new and unused - you may get a good deal on it and then you can sell your older one - someone is bound to want it....
