I have a 1990 Four Winns Candia Deckboat with a 5.7L OMC Cobra. Pulled it out of storage and would not start. I traced the problem down to needing new points on distributor. I was able to clean up the old points and get it running for the weekend, but then a new problem arose.
Was running the boat and all of the sudden I heard some popping sounds and my "factory" depth finder started flashing and beeping. Eventually my engine died, and would not restart. When I turned the key it would turn over, but I did get the beep for the system check. I figured the popping sound was the distributor missing spark, so I did change the points. I when to start and had no spark. I checked the kill switch and noticed it was stuck in when I removed the lanyard. I put a test light on the switch and was able to determine that the switch was bad. I bypassed the switch via screw driver to see if it would run. It did fire and ran for a short while. The depth sounder was still buzzing as well. I noticed that the screw drivers were fairly warm.
My 1st question is, can I use a universal switch to replace the old one? My old switch only has 2 terminals, and a new one has several. How would I wire this?
My 2nd question is does it sound like I have more of a wiring problem than just the switch? Or could it be that it was getting warm because there was not a full constant contact?
