Kill Switch

I purchased a Seachoice? Universal Kill Switch and Lanyard. I thought it would fairly simple to install. Take the yellow/black wire from my ignition a clip it onto the kill switch. With the motor running I tested the kill switch by pulling the tether cable until it broke connection with the kill switch, motor kept running. Does the kill switch have to be grounded before it will operate correctly?

We need to know the engine this is connected to in order to help you for sure. There has to be a second wire connected to the kill switch and that is most likely a ground.

it would be nice to know what your working on, engine type and ignition system type.
But if your working with a basic cdi outboard ignition then yes you have to ground the switch. That's how you stop the motor, by grounding the powerpack.

Sorry guys. It's a 2004 125hp Mercury ELPTO (4 cylinder).

Yes, outboard models are equipped with grounding type.
Inboard model is a usually normally closed contact,,,
usually 3 prongs on the back of your ignition sw, typical purple wire that feeds your guages & ignition coil,,,,,splice the kill SW in that loop goes to the engine bay.
Simply cutting off the ignition coil power.
