First things first, BE30BALCO and 25BA78C. I brought the kill switches home last weekend to clean them up, now they're clean I tested them. Could you please explain how they work? It has four pins, when the button is in (lanyard on/motor on) contact is made between a pair of opposite terminals. When the button is out (lanyard off, motor off) contact is made between the other pair and the circuit breaks between the first pair i.e one pair always has a circuit. Could you explain how/why and how they should be wired in come the new season? I can post a picture if this would be any help. Many Thanks

Re: Kill Switch

While I have never actually worked on a kill switch Ill attempt a basic discription.
Basic killswitch circuit function.Should be a wire from the magneto and another wire to ground.
Motor runs with the kill switch open.Stops when kill switch is closed connecting the mag wire to
the wire that goes to ground. Thus shorting the mag and stoping the motor. There may or may not be some other connections involved with the more modern motors.Sorry I cant be more help. But someone will be along with more info.

Re: Kill Switch

Thanks spike for your reply, that's all four pins accounted for. Do you know anywhere where I could find a circuit diagram?

Re: Kill Switch

To me it sound like its a dual switch.
If you have a magneto engine connnect a wire from both of you magnetos and wire theam to the two pins that conect when you remove the lanyard .
If you have battery igntion find the igntion power wire on your igniton swicth and run it to your kill switch to the pins that are conected when the lanyard is in .
and run a wire from the switch back to the ign termal on your igniton swtich.
I hope this helps.
let me know If you need more help I can make a diagram if nessasary.

Re: Kill Switch

Does this switch only have two wires that attatch to it?If so they go to the 'pins' that are not connected with the teather on.
That way, when the teather is off,the power pack gets grounded, shutting down the ignition.

DHP

Re: Kill Switch

The motors have magnetos and, just in case there's any confusion (which I'm sure there isn't:p):

Lanyard on (motor on): on-off-on-off
Lanyard off (motor off): off-on-off-on

I just figured my first description was rubbish!

DHP, I think there's only two leads although I don't remember for sure. I'll have a look next time. That sounds good to me though. I remember touching the contacts when a motor was running once and got a nasty pulsing shock, just like what would supply a spark plug. The fact that you two guys agree is encouraging!!

Re: Kill Switch

To follow up, what would be connected to what if I was to use all four terminals on the switch? (Bearing in mind there's nothing fancy on a 1985 30hp Evinrude or 1978 25hp johnson!)

Re: Kill Switch

The kill switch will ground the charge capacitor in the powerpack, whenever it is set to "on" (lanyard out).
So output voltage of the CDi is zero.
With my 30hp Johnson the switch is a very critical device, sentive to failures due to oxidation films in the switch, reducing the isolation between the terminals dramatically.

You 'll be advised to clean it every season.

Greetings from wet and cold Germany.

Nordy

Hi Nordy, greetings from freezing UK too!! You should have seen the rubbish I managed to flush out of the switches, I will definitely see they're cleaned regularly(that means i'll do it:p)

Re: Kill Switch

Guys, sorry it's been so long, just been re-inspired! Took the switches out yesterday to see they were still okay, turns out one wasn't, got a whole load more crap out of it:mad:. Anyway, it made me think, what do I connect to what if I go back to the boat and find four wires, I'm fine with two, but no idea with four. Some of you may know whether I'll have four or not, which is equally/more useful! Thanks
