Hell it could have been 1999, still odd. I grew up in the PNW, and I my wind they are cold water creatures eating salmon and seals. Not red snapper or whatever they are doing down there.

The captain on seeing orcas in the Gulf: “I’ve had friends that have. But no, I have never seen them personally. But I knew they were out there,” Ream said.

It sounds like they are unusual but not that rare if his friends of seen them. A few years ago we were fishing off the Kanai peninsula in Alaska for salmon. I got a few good videos on my phone of orcas doing their bubble net feeding. Similar to the article above, our captain said that it's not uncommon but that she had never seen it. They surfaced probably two dozen times as we were hauling in salmon after salmon in rough seas. It was a blast.

A couple of times a customer's line would get wrapped in the props as she was doing everything that she could to keep the boat steady in huge swells. When the lines wrapped, she would cut power, tilt the motors up, and run to the back of the boat and *leap* over the top. She was face-first untangling a line from one of the props. I would be on one side with my left hand holding a rod in the water and the other hand holding one of her ankles. A buddy would be on the other side of the stern, a line in the water with his right hand and the other holding on to her other ankle. A little unorthodox but also one of the coolest sea captains that I've ever seen in action.
