Re: King Cobra issue.....

well Im not talking about keeping the 460 forever.. Right now its in good shape and the risers are like new ... just been replaced not to long ago... Im thinking of replacing the drive this yrs and the engine next spring... Im not loaded with money and Im trying to do what i can to salvage some boating for the family this yr without wasting the money on just the drive.. plus if I sell it it will probably be worth alittle more with a volvo drive rather then the king... I think.. Besides wife loves the boat so I may keep it....

Well, that IS a nice looking boat! (I don't like your "kitchen chairs" though;))

I can see how you might want to keep it.

Yes I forgot your other choice in manifolds. 454&adapters I thought about doing that on mine when I was deciding what to do.

I really think your cheapest option is to find another used drive locally (same side of the world) You should be able to find a drive. It will be a bolt on option (assuming everything else works good)

Believe me if you keep looking, you'll find a damaged donor boat with a Merc or Volvo eng/drive.

Paul, did you end up replacing the first (defective) coupler and getting another one? (was that you that had that problem?)

Well Rick, I spun the Original (shattered it) then found new after market which had center hub (spline) off kilter. They replaced it and all is good now!
My question to the guys is' Can a Cobra not a king bolt up to the kings gimble. Did a little research and looks like cutlas can get a rebuilt cobra with the correct gear ratios for the size of his boat. Might have to pitch prop thou gear ratios just little deferent from the king! What do guys think?

Re: King Cobra issue.....

I think a lot of the Cobras will "bolt up"

The problem is that OMC for (only) the 7.5L model (at least in 1987) , made the oil capacity 108oz. (almost double) the "smaller" ones....

The "smaller" models held only 60-64 oz. of oil.(4cyl models 60oz, V-6/SB V-8 models 64oz)

I would think that if you put the torque available from a 460 or 454 in front of a smaller model, the oil temps would be considerably higher and wear would be accelerated.....much like putting a BBC in front of an Alpha.

Mercruiser did that only for a very short time before they discovered that they were breaking them and then subsequently developed the Bravo I/II/III.

I would have just rebuilt my 460 and kept the Cobra if I hadn't found the Mercruiser. My problem was the flat cam in the engine. everything else was in nice shape....even with the flat cam it would still do 50 mph at 4200 rpm. (19p prop, cupped to 20)

Of course, that's all it would turn flat out! It used to turn 5000 at WOT and went 60mph according to my brother, who bought the boat new...I believe it now since it'll do about 57(GPS) with the 454 Bravo III (1.81:1) and 26p props......The difference now is that it just ROCKETS out of the hole (a result of the Bravo III)

The King Cobra also appeared almost the same size as the 'new' Bravo.
