Teenager with peanut allergy dies after a kiss
CTV.ca News Staff

A Quebec teenager with a peanut allergy has died after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten a peanut butter sandwich hours earlier.

Fifteen-year-old Christina Desforges died Monday. She went into anaphylactic shock and in spite of being given an adrenalin shot, could not be revived.

Desforges lived 250 km north of Quebec City in Saguenay.

The official cause of the teen's death has not yet been released.

Pediatric allergist Karen Sigman told CTV's Tania Krywiak if peanuts are still on the tongue or the lips, they can still cause a reaction.

Sigman says teenagers with allergies have to let their friends know.

"If they're going to be dating somebody that they have to tell the people they're close to that they're allergic to make sure the people they're with aren't in contact with those nuts or peanuts," Sigman said.

Parents of children with nut and peanut allergies have the added pressure of constantly watching what their offspring are eating.

Terri Elituv, mother of 12-year-old Jake Elituv, told CTV News they always watch out for snacks that include peanuts, or traces of the legume.

"Everything is just sort of fraught with this underlying tension, you're anxious about what he's going to have, what he could touch," she said.

Elituv's other concern is what happens when her son becomes more independent in his teen years -- and might not share his allergy concerns with friends at parties.

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe...125/peanut_allergy_051125/20051125?hub=Canada

Her boyfriend is gonna be one messed up guy.

Hmmm, You never heard of peanut or wheat allergies 40 years ago. Now they seem to be in the news on a regular basis. Wonder what is causing it. Our water, genetically modified foods, present day vaccines ???

Sounds to me like the media has made a long jump to a conclusion there.

The "cause of death" has been released by the media before the investigation is even off the ground.

I can see the possiblity of it happening. I knew someone who was extremely allergic to peanuts. Just holding one in your hand and touching his arm afterwards and he would break out in hives.

AK Chappy

I can see that happening too......we had tables in our school lunch room that were 100% peanut free just to make sure no residual peanut was left behind and so the few people in our school that were extremely allergic could feel safe eating there

It that passed down or do they just develop an allergy to it?

I hear some folks have the same problem with shellfish.

spots

They are merely waiting for the official cause of death. Its pretty obvious of the cause. What else would cause this peanut allergic girl who just kissed a guy who had eaten peanut butter sandwiches to go into anaphylactic shock.

I don't think the media is out of line at all.

Very sad story.

Momma always said, "Brush your teeth after you eat" ;) I feel I can respond humorously now that there is significant doubt that the death was not caused by peanuts. I am sure the physician pronouncing death cautioned the media not to quote him and that in his professional opinion there were no indications of peanut poisoning. The cause of death was anaphylactic shock brought on by an unknown substance.
Film at eleven. ;)

Go back to "Technosenitive"..IMHO... Nuts can be deadly for those that have a specific allergy....NO PUN INTENDED!....JK

I agree with theriver......In some cases the media can "jump the gun", but i sincerely doubt they have in this instance. JB I repect your stance that the "cause of death" has been released before an investigation and the the media has "made a long jump to a conclusion", but with that being said I think anyone who knows people with this type of allergy know just how serious it is, and how incredibly small the amount of peanuts it takes to "kill" someone.

Sure its possible that the anaphylactic shock could have been from something else............but how likely is that????

Re: Kiss of Death, Sad.

Like poison ivy, some people get it and become hospitalized. Then some people get a rash while others it doesn't phase them.

These people that know they have this allergy have a hard time finding food that is prepared to their needs. It is not as easy as one thinks. Even stuff fried in peanut oil will cause a reaction.

The latest I heard that would cause a reaction is if peanut oil is used in biodiesel. The exhaust could be enough to cause a reaction.

I do believe that is why peanut butter and anything sandwiches are banned from schools!

I am not contradicting the media. I think they probably got it right.

I am familiar with serious allergies and the effects of contact with the allergen.

My point is that the conclusion MAY be wrong and if it is a lot of unnecessary pain has been caused.

Wife's a flight attendant and on some flights they will not serve peanuts as a passenger is on board that is allergic.

Some people are so sensitive that even smelling peanuts will send them into a reaction.

About 10 years ago the cashier at the local parts store died from eating something that had traces ('may contain' the wrapper said) of peanuts in it. That seems to be a potent allergy.

I feel sorry for the boyfriend. Couldn't even imagine how he feels. :( I think a few prayers are in order for her family and the boyfriend. Really a sad story when you think about it.

Funny how a thread like this veers off into a condemnation of "the media". Even got a little dig in there about "the possibility of experimenting with drugs". It takes until the 17th post before someone steps in and points this in the direction it ought to go: compassion and prayers for those involved.
