Kitty Cat diabetes... And Kitty Cat siezures... holy cow.

Lost the dog a year ago last week, and now i'm looking at kitty cat's time on earth. Spooky is your typically run of the mill mutt tabby, a runt, and pushing 18. She has diagnosed kitty diabetes for the last 3 months, for which i'm doing my best on monitering her urine and dosing insulin.
Problem is, I gave her to much insulin this morning, Spook had a siezure this afternoon.
It was a bit crazy, she was on the couch, I in the other room. I heard her start to scream. There is a neighborhood cat that makes it's way into the house every now and then (I leave doors open all the time) and the 2 cat's don't fight, but the sight of the other one pisses Spook off. So I give it a second thinking the other cat is in the house walking through the room, but after the second the scream doesn't sound right, so I run into the living room to see Spooky in full extension, muscles tight, kitty scream, flailing around, having a siezure.
I sort of knew what to do, which is nothing except to make sure the cat didn't fall off the couch. Had a buddy who has since passed who had epilepsy all through out high school. It was only a 10-15 second siezure, but man, I've never seen one in a cat before. It was fairly... violent.
I rushed Spook off to the vets. She was extremely hyperglycemic (sp?). They put her on an IV and sugar water right away. Her urine as in indicator has been almost immposible to moniter for B/S levels. Sometimes she drinks alot of water and the urine is clear, and throws of the litmus test, other times it isn't. According the the vet, her internal organs are turning on and off like a lightswitch.
The cat was a leftover from when my parents moved and didn't want to take her with them. I'm not a cat person, but agreed to take care of it. I really could care less wether it lives or dies.
The cat does it's own thing, is not terribly friendly, and all I do is feed it, pay for it's stuff, and clean out her stinky litterbox. But i'm not a total azz. I don't want to see the thing suffer. I almost made the decision to put her down tonight, but the vet sort of talked me out of it. My vets are fantastic, looked over my 2 now gone dogs, and I take their word as gospel.

I would hate to see the cat go into a huge seizure, for an extended period, and then croak there on the floor.
Has anyone experienced long term kitty siezures?
I would rather see the animal go peacefully in it's sleep, but I wouldn't necessarily know if the cat was siezeing to death in the middle of the night in my own sleep. I'm sort of at odds on what to do. As of right now the cat is fine. The vet assures me the cat is not in pain, and is not during the siezures. I can bring this cat out back and show her mr .22 if I need to, but I wouldn't unless I knew the cat was in hopeless pain. For me it's not about life or death, it's about suffering or not.

Anyone have any insight to kitty cat siezures?

some diabetic cats are easily controlled. others are hard. when there blood sugar is off, they feel horrible, just as a human, nausea, dizziness, to hyper.

if you are having, that much trouble, keeping her level, i would humanly let her go to sleep.

Our old dog, after going through chemo and beating lymphoma developed diabetes. We gave him 2 shots a day of insulin. He eventually had a couple seizures, and by this time was totally blind. I did what was best for my biddy and put him down, I still miss him terribly.

About 6 months later, his "brother" a cat, got cancer. We found out because he had terrible seizures. He was on a shelf laying down and had one, he shot 3' across the room. Luckily, he passed in his sleep a few days later.
I still miss him terribly too. :(

They usually let you know when it's time. Too bad we can;t do for our families what we can do for our pets.

Wow Jason, sorry to hear it. :( We have all lost our best friends and being close to 18 is right up there for a cat.

I would call the Vet and talk with the Vet about the best approach.

"hyper" means over.. .too much; too little, under, is "hypo".

I think you meant hypoglycemic. . .too little BS.

My last cat, the infamous Catzilla, lived to 14 and my current cat, Miss Kitty, is 19 and thriving.

Vet's diagnosis of 'Zilla was "old" when she started wasting away.

No experience with feline diabetes, but the notion scares me. :(

I admit it, I'm a cat person. I love 'em. However, I only have two cats and one of them sucks. She hides most of the day and only really comes out at night to be petted when I'm in bed or in the morning as I get dressed. She's afraid of everything. She's cute and fuzzy but that's about it. If she had any health issue greater than a cold, I'd put her down. She's 10 and I've supported her long enough. You're not real attached to your cat and it doesn't sound like it's in real good shape. I'd put it down.

If her care was easy and relatively painless for her, I'd keep the cat going for while. If not and its hard to control her levels, I'd euthanize her.

One thing you might check on, however, is what method your vet uses to put animals down. He sounds like a good one, so he probably "puts them to sleep," but there are some pretty nasty forms of euthanizing animals. Most of these occur in animal shelters, but I'd still ask.

Re: Kitty Cat diabetes... And Kitty Cat siezures... holy cow.

My 19 year old tabby had a major kidney infection 4 months ago. Since then she ate just enough to keep her going. Lost a good bit of weight.

I knew it was just a matter of time before i would have to put her down. But as long as she wasn't suffering i was going to wait.

This past weeekend while at the gathering, i had to take her to the vet's and let her go. in 24 hours, she deteriated fast. She just got too weak to even stand on her own so i made the decision. By the time i got her to the vet, she could hardly hold her head up.

Now she isn't wobbling about and I dont have the hold my breath waiting for here to fall and break something (hip or leg) and suffer more.

It's a hard thing to do and i wish you luck with it.
