1984 chaparral 215 merc 350/260, merc. o/d
Before I send this block to get rebuilt I'm looking for some help. When I listen to the engine run it sounds to be an external squeaking from metal coming from between the hull and back of the motor. the knocking is also from this location and sounds external as well. It does increase w/ rpm's and continues in or out of gear. I'm curious if there could be anything in the drive line that could be making this awful noise. I would not consider this, but I'm not familiar with out drive setup's and the squeaking and knocking seem to be external. Anyone's opinion will help me and could save me a ton of money and time.
Thanks for you time spent reading this
Tony

Could be an engine alignment problem or a u-joint noise your hearing. You could pull the drive and run the motor to be sure. After the drive is off you have to supply water to the motor through the hose from the outdrive. http://www.mercstuff.com/alpharemoval.htm
make sure the drive listed here is correct look here and Good Luck

Sounds to me like it's at least a u-joint (knocking) and maybe the gimble bearing too (squeaking). Squeaking could be either part, knocking is most likely the joints. Drive dedfinitely has to come off to troubleshoot that further.

I pulled off O/D and it's still making a loud squeaking from flywheel area and knocking. The knocking is hitting hard on metal to metal. still has great oil pressure any more suggestions would be great.

Hmm. Has to be something in or on the engine then. Could be a loose coupler, or stuck starter bendix, or worst case a bearing that's not getting oil. Engine likely has to come out to investigate further.

have you isolated the engine? so that ALL that is turning is just the engine. you can remove a belt, (or belts), momentarly. are there other acc. that are running when the engine is on, ie bildge pump, blower, outdrive trim pump? childs toy, (hiding of course)? Was this engine submerged? sl

Did you pull the upper and lower drives?
