Re: knot meter on motor? 90 hk 96

after reading again some of the previous posts especially cougars and then thinkign about the picture I posted of my lower unit( with no hole!!)

I am thinking that the area in question could have been used for a mounting spot...because if you look at my picture there is a large boss cast into the housing that goes INWARDS in the void inside the LU hosuiongs cavity...the only reason for a boss like that would be an outside access thread!!!

they boss is cast there to allow meat for a thread!!!

even though mine doesnt have one!!

maybe there was an option to mount one there!!

UPDATE:..I found nothing !! ha ha ha..they offer a speedometer kit...but it looks like it mounts to the boat!! and needs water to pass by it..

bob

news to me...

but makes sense....now to look into the 1996 accessories!!

Some engines have a built-in pitot. A tube connects to the pitot on the engine and is then routed up to the knot meter (speedometer) at the helm. The ports at the side of the leg are water inlets for the water pump. The pitot inlet is at the front of the leg. A short flexible tube usually extends out of the leg for attachment of the tube. I don't know off-hand if your engine has that feature so it may be necessary to fit an external pitot to the stern of the boat.

I had an '85 140 HP that had exactly as Silvertip describes. A small forward facing pitot hole in the LU above the gearcase which was tubed up to a fitting on the upper LU just below the midsection/LU parting line. I never used it because my boat already had a nylon speed pickup installed. For a new installation, if you cared, it certainly was a cleaner installation.

id love to see a part # for the PITOT so i can look it up...as for where it is, the OPs photo shows the hole on the LU ITSELF!! not the modsection!!!

is it JUST MOUTNED there?? or does it ENTER into the inside of the LU??

I posted a photo that shows a BOSS cast into that area...so it is feasibnl;e that SOMETHING could be mounted there...

is this PITOT an OMC product or not??

The pitot IS the small diameter HOLE (~1/16" as a guess) in the LU. Inside the LU, there must be a cast stub, which plastic tubing is used to connect to the pn fitting. A pitot need not protrude ... all it is in a separate house is a small, forward facing hole and is the same on aircraft and marine applications. I don't see how a hole could have a p/n in this case. The rest is just a fitting and some tubing. The fitting is 0326266 FITTING, Speedometer, shown on the upper part of the LU.

Your LU does not seem to have this feature.

Bob. there is no "speedo kit". All that's needed is plastic tubing. The picture is from an '85 J 140 gearcase. The fitting comes capped & installed on the motor. #6 IS THE FITTING AND #7 THE CAP.

Martinal94'S 90 DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE THIS FEATURE.

No idea, unless LU was replaced with one from another motor having the pitot feature. If there's a forward facing small hole in the lower section of the lower unit, you have the feature. Your picture doesn't show if it's there.
