Re: Know what sucks?

My truck was stolen out of my driveway. Police ended up finding it 4 months later. It was basically driven 10 miles and parked. I had left a spare set of keys in the door panel and left it unlocked one night. The only reason the police found it was because there were a ton of spider webs all over it. Was good timing that they found it when they did because the insurance company was literally going to be paying us off the very next day.

What is good for you is that it is a brand new truck(I assume it is from your description). Mine is 10 years old with only 40K miles on it so it would have been tough to get a similar one for the money they were giving us.

Thanks Bruce. I keep waiting for the call. I posted a reward on the Augusta GA craiglist lost and found. Were so heavily wooded where I,m at that it could be stuck in the woods somewhere. I need a Fox News station to get a chopper in the air! :D Thanks for the reply and I'll keep you posted.

Not to amke you feel bad, but check with the local FD to see if they had any recent car fires that went unclaimed. We would routinely get vehicle fires in the woods, only to find out that the vehicle was stolen earlier in the day. If it gets hot enough, the VIN tags get destroyed and unless there's a license plate, they can't track the owner.

Chances are good this didn't happen since thieves won't care who's license plate is on the vehicle when they burn it, but it would at least give piece of mind that it's still intact somewhere.

Honestly, if someone steals my car I don't want it back. Where else do you think the "drive it like you stole it" saying comes from?

Wow! That is really sad. What an awful feeling. That's one reason I have a dog. No one comes in my yard unless invited. It's really sad we can't trust people. Probably less than 5% are the problem, but their actions make it seem much higher.

Re: Know what sucks?

I used to have on of those old satellite receivers in my old pickup. One day my office had an impromptu meeting called at the local hotel conference room to announce a merger. All key employees were told to be there in the next 30 minutes out of the blue. Drove over to the hotel and rushed in, completely forgetting to take my receiver in with me as I normally did at the time. when I came out I drove about 3 miles before it dawned on me that all I was listening to was static. Went to change the satellite channel and realized it was gone. Since my window was not broken I assumed I stupidly left the door unlocked. It wasn't until the next day that I noticed the thief smashed the actual door lock in. The repair ended up costing me a whole new door panel and would have been cheaper if he just broke the window. It really is a horrible feeling knowing a stranger was in your car.

Re: Know what sucks?

Sorry about your loss. I had something bad as well. I live in NJ, and was called to a week-long training sesion in Virginia, on a Sunday, some years ago in October. I planned to pull my speedboat out of the water, just in case a storm blew up. Just before I could pull it, my wife crashed the car that I would use to trailer it. She then promptly borrowed a truck from a friend. No problem, I will use the truck to trailer the boat, right? 1 hour before I was to trailer the boat, my wife loses the keys. The owner is not avail, and time runs out, as I need to leave for the training session. I say to wife "keep an eye on speedboat. Don't let it sink".

I get the call in Virginia on Monday at 1:30AM. Boat sunk to bottom of lagoon(saltwater). I have to continue to attend training session, eventually finishing up Friday at noon. I drive back to NJ, to start salvage....

Re: Know what sucks?

No recovery or word of anything yet. Hartford has been great. Already have a rental although my fat *** does not fit well in a Chevy Aveo. Insurance made it sound like they will start processing after 2 weeks. I am sitting in the garage using the neighbors internet access because my phone lines mysteriously dont work. There was a shovel leaning against the house where the telephone box is and it's not my shovel. Also found out that the night they took the truck. another vehicle was broken into one street over. He left his wallet in the car and they took it and dashed after smashing the window.

I have an idea of what you are going thru, kind of like a punch in the gut when you wake up to an empty driveway. Been there, done that, learned a lesson the hard way. In the last 36 years there were only two days that I did not have insurance on a car and it was stolen on the second day.

Mine was stripped for body parts and found in a landfill so at least I got something back to work with but it was never the same car.

Yea. No feeling like that. I lived in Cleveland almost my whole life before moving down south. Had my car broke into twice at Kent State. Probably college kids looking to sell stereos for money. This was my first theft and it is a punch in the gut. Just not knowing where it's at eats at ya. My new truck will have a hidden sattelite system in it so I can find it if it ever gets stolen. I want to deck em myself when I catch up to them. Hopefully this will never happen again.

Re: Know what sucks?

It really doesn't take much. Anytime something like this happens at your home makes you feel really violated. I was mowing my lawn one afternoon and while I was mowing the side yard some kids drove by and looked suspicious. I watched them until they turned the corner then I started mowing again. A few seconds later my neighbor from across the street ran up to me and said the car stopped just around the corner and one kid got out and ran up the block to my garage and stole my gas can right out of the open garage while I was mowing the side yard. It was only $20 value but I still called it in. It was only a month ago but I still find myself feeling very suspicious of anyone I see in the neighborhood. I know it isn't anywhere near what you went through but I understand the feeling when it happens at your home. I imagine it wouldn't be so personal had it happened somewhere else like at a gas station as mentioned before.
In truth for you I hope they don't find it because you may find a truck that you really don't recognize or want back.

Re: Know what sucks?

I called onstar and since I have only had the truck for a month and never activated it, she said there was nothing they could do. I asked if they could activate it now and she said something about having to be in the vehicle with the keys.
**************************************************************************

I wouldn't believe this for a heartbeat! I'd be willing to make a pretty large bet that if your insurance company or local LEO's made the call, that truck could be "miraculously" tracked by Onstar. Those systems are fully capable, whether you're paying for the service or not.
