Kurt Vonnegut is dead

Died last nite.

I enjoyed his books. He lived longer than he probably should have, given his lifestyle. I was never a big sci fi fan, but I enjoyed his fantasy books.

And his "Welcome to the Monkey House" was a great example of fine short fiction.

And, of course, "Slaughterhouse 5" was great.

RIP

His novels ,"Breakfast Of Champions" and "Mother Night" should be on the compulsory reading list of every English Major student.

According to Mr Vonnegut, "Slauterhouse Five" was written in his head over the coarse of his service. The second wolrd war left him a changed man in every way. If one reads his books, you can see the scars of insanity comming to his pen.
But he deserves all the praise we can give him, even now, posthumouslly. He served with honor in times of great threat to America and the free world.

He was twisted, yes. But most men would be after flying a mission over Dresdin and seeing the carnage of war first-hand, and knowing he had a hand in it.

May he finally rest in peace.

Why would you say he was unhappy? Just curious.

And he did not fly over Dresden. He was a POW who went thru the allied fire bombing attack on Dresden.

He was a lefty all right, but his brilliance wasn't defined by his politics. He recently published a series of short stories that he wrote for Women's Day and other women's mags from the 50s and 60s. Excellent reading.

He said he was an unhappy man.
Said he wanted to save his children from having to tell us (the public).

Personally, can't say much about his writing, as I have limited exposure.

He was a satirist, and he was just as likely to say a thing for the effect it might have than the reality behind it.

I have read his works extensively, as I have Mark Twain who is often thought to be an equally (or more) unhappy. Twain got himself into financial troubles from time to time, and went thru some family tragedies as well, and there was some specific reason's for Twain's supposed unhappiness, but Vonnegut was successful as a writer from virtually the start.

I don't think he was any more unhappy than most brilliant men that see the world as it is, and imagine what the world could be, and are disappointed with the difference. That's kind of normal, I would think.

Show me a person that is happy all the time, and I would suspect his intellectual capability.

And it's not too late to read Vonnegut. His books are all still in print, and are available at libraries and bookstores thruout the country.
