1987 3 cyl 70 hp.
I Fired it up first time this year yesterday, and it ran pretty good - just lots of smoke and sludge at the prop (from reading other posts this seems normal).
I replaced the w/p impeller last year but wanted to put new gaskets in it this year cause I had to make my own last time.
When I pulled the LU off a part fell out on the floor. It's a short piece of metal that fits on the shifter shaft, with a flange on one end. I need to know which end goes up.
Also, when I took the impeller housing apart, the impeller blades were going in a bunch of different directions. Is this a big problem? Which way is the directon of rotation?
Should I use rtv on the impeller housing gaskets?

http://www.grantbrown.ca/boat/index3.html

Thanks,
Grant

Just leave the imp. in the hsg and repace as a unit, the coupling goes flange down

Thanks, but I'm not going to replace the w/p as a unit. The impeller has very few hours on it and is still nice and soft, plus I already have the gaskets.
Which way is the directon of rotation?
Should I use sealant on the gaskets?

Thanks,
Grant

Thats what I meant, do not remove the impeller from the hsg. just slide them, hsg. and imp on as a unit  if a gasket neededs goop on it you probably should spend the money for a new gasket

Hi Laddie,

Thanks for your time.
The housing is already taken apart. I replaced the impeller last year, but the parts guy didn't have the housing gaskets in stock, so I made some out of blank gasket material. I wasn't happy with the ones I made so I'm replacing them. The housing is already apart and the impeller blades are all pointing in different directions. I was wondering if this is a problem, and when I put it back in what direction the shaft spins. Clockwise or counter clockwise?
I'm not going to use any sealant because the gaskets are brand new Quicksilver still sealed in the bags. The gasket in the photo is one that I made.
Re: L.U. parts/Impeller Pictures

Thanks everyone,

I put it together this afternoon w no troubles. I'm pretty sure I never turned the shaft after removing the LU, but I have a very strong 4 y.o. son that spends lots of time in the shop. He's always trying to "help", so maybe that's what happened.
Thanks for all the input and advice.
This board is awesome!
