Re: Labor day craziness

I went the other way with it. We have an island near us that gets crazy populated on weekends and holidays. I went out (early in the morning, though) to get a good spot and watch the hilarity ensue. Took 14 people on the boat and spent the time on the float and grilling and being sociable.

Smart money says to stay off of the water when weekend warriors are buzzing around like flies. To the island early and leave just before dark.

Where did you guys go? We have some friends that pull into The Glen about 3 days before the weekend and wait til the day after the weekend to go home. Oh to have a cabin boat. I keep trying to convince my wife that we really need one, but I am not having much luck.

Had a great time! Great weather.
Fri watched Band & fireworks on the boat.
Sat meet up with friends. at the sandbar. came in after dark.
Sun cook out at sand bar then on the water restaurant/bar - stayed out till midnight- running the lake at night with hardly anyone else out is one of my favorite things.

There were tons of boats/skies/sails of all kinds but did not see any idiots.:D

Re: Labor day craziness

beautiful weather and lots of boaters out; no morons in sight.

...they were all over at the JRB Monday!!!!!

Seems everytime a couple of us fishing set up a drift some idiot in a go-fast or kids on Jet-Fleas got their kicks by buzzing between us. Some were even blasting through the pilings!!!

On several occassion the commercial traffic passing under the lift span had to ride their horns to clear the knot-heads out of the channel. I can not understan a jet ski jumping a tug's wake repeatily or flirting with the bow wave of a barge assembly....I was young once, but not that stupid!!

No boating for me over the weekend. I tempted fate by driving 300 miles and returned to a news report of a 38 footer sinking 30 miles off Charleston. Seven souls on board, four adults + three children. All survived 18+ hours in the water by wearing PFD's and hanging on to a floating ice chest. Some exposure problems and jellyfish stings for all. Not many details released yet but apparently only time for one short "mayday" with no location info. USCG launched a search anyway without success and returned to base after sunset. Spouse of boat owner called USCG later saying her husband and party failed to return BUT she had their float plan. USCG launched helo again before sunrise and survivors were spotted just after sunrise with the bow of the boat barely visble. No info about EPIRB, flares, strobes, etc. Will post a link to the online story when I find it. Float plan made for a happy ending!

I went fishing friday evening and into the night some, pulled up a few small rockfish, the rest of the weekend I went to a couple of dirt track races and left the lake to the speedboat jetski party crowd.

Eddie move on down to MMBT. The jet skis and sparkle boys don't come down there.

We go to Disappearing Island every weekend over the summer (at the mouth of Ponce Inlet). We take a 5 day vacation and run the boat from Lake Monroe north through Jax and down the ICW. We stay at St. Augustine for 3 days and then on to Daytona.

We'll spend the summer here and head back home sometime in October. It's nice, just for a change of scenery and a little getaway.

Must be nice. That is my retirement plan, to have a boat we can just about live on and a motorhome, both for traveling.

How was the police presence? They said they were gonna beef up the Coast Guard and Police patrols around DI that weekend. They blamed it on the 2 deaths from the last 2 holidays. Of course they said it would be BUI and speeding crackdown, but the deaths had nothing to do with either one. One was just somebody inexperienced driving in front of a larger boat, and the other one was from someone sleeping with the generator on and died of carbon monoxide poison. Neither had anything to do with speeding or BUI. Not sure why they needed to have an excuse to be there, but the excuse they gave was bogus.

I saw 1 FWC boat and he never even looked up as he went by. We usually go to the south side of the island, where the water is a little deeper closer to the beach and the crowd a little more well behaved. Staying on the beach and not showcasing the brew tends to leave you out of the spotlight.

It's the people running WOT 25' from the shoreline and hooping/hollering at the cops while raising a beer in toast to them who tend to get boarded. Most deserve it.

It was a fairly well-behaved weekend, but I was only there Saturday and skipped Sun/Mon.
