At a riverside restaurant for lunch (The Alamar; stiff drinks, good sammich, bad service)...not on a boat.

Only three words could describe what we saw on the river:

Boating. Special. Olympics.

And we were a few miles up from the confluence of the American / Sacramento. We drove down to check out Old Sac, and the water was packed. Did I mention that the VERY limited Salmon season opened a couple days ago? Yeah...so Labor day crowds AND some really hardy fisherman....

I'm going to take the family out for a river ride NEXT weekend, thanks.

Re: Labor Day on the Sacramento River

Don't blame you. I checked my crab traps twice this weekend - found traps moved, opened, bait missing, crabs gone, both times. At least today, they missed one, so I have a half dozen in the pot right now.

Sadly, we also had an accident this evening. I'm waiting to find out if a friend of mine's step-daughter drowned. She went under and some folks tried to do CPR, but it took about an hour for Wildlife and Fisheries to get the call and get to her. I watched the ambulance take her away and talked to her step father, but it wasn't known by the family if she has survived, at that time. From what I heard, I doubt it, but will wish for the best.

Just yesterday, I passed by their camp on the way out to my traps and saw the grand-daughter playing. At the time, I thought about how nice it is for a child to have such experiences. Now I wonder if she still has a momma.

Sorry to have to say it, but the woman was apparently very intoxicated and was told a bunch of times to stay out of the water. As soon as everyone turned around, she jumped in the canal.

Jay, sorry to hear. Hope she's all right.

I watched the news after we got home, and on top of Labor Day and Salmon opening..this weekend was also the "no license needed" fishing weekend. I am soooo glad I stayed off the water.

Regretfully, I have to report that the woman that I mentioned, Hannah Lorio, age 26, died yesterday evening. She was taken to a local hospital, but was apparently dead on arrival. She leaves two children.
