I have a 5.7 mercruiser alpha 1. Today with full throttle down the boat didn t go more than 2200 rpm, approx 24 mph. Its gone over 45 mph last year. The sound in lower unit is louder than normal too. What could possibly be wrong?

Re: LACK OF SPEED

I assume normal rpm would be about 4800?
Could be throttle cable needs adjustment or is going bad. Did mechanic possibly disturb this while servicing unit?
lower unit needs inspection for sure.

If the drive is making more noise than normal, drain the drive and check for water and/or metal contamination.

I'm not sure that "hope will float"...

My OMC Cobra was "serviced" by a "professional" twice.

1st time they didn't bother to put oil in it at all. worked for about 10 min.(they replaced the drive of course)

2nd time serviced by a Four Winns Dealer "professional". They filled it improperly. Went for about the same ....10 min.(they replaced it also).

Third (and subsequent)time? ME.

I'm slow but I eventually learn.

Regards,

Rick
