I'm adding a swim platform to my bolt. I'm close to done but I have come to a crossroads. All I have left to do is mount the stupid thing, but i cant decide weather or not i could use Lag bolts or wood screws to mount it or should i just drill through the transom and use nuts and bolts. I would rather use the lag bolts or large wood screws, beacuse I'm thinking the nut and bolt method could leak. But then will the screws be able to hold enough weight without ripping out of the 2 inches of fiberglass. It will probibly need to hold about 300 lbs or a couple of people.

I'd go with through bolting with some large fender washers or a backing plate. You can seal the holes with some 3M 5200 sealant. That should prevent any possible leakage from occuring.
Also don't forget to use stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers to prevent corrosion.

oldblu,

Through bolt.

Lag bolts/screws can leak water into your transom, without you knowing it. Before you know it, you have a rotted transom.

Though bolt. It is strong and you never worry about it, but be sure to bed the bolts in 5200 or something to waterproof the fasteners.

i put a swim platform on my boat about three months ago. i drilled thru the transom. used all stainless steel along with good size washers on the inside for support. on the one bottom support bracket, i used a good size wood screw, since that one only supports, not pulling out. also the lower on was under the floor. make sure to use a good sealant. it has worked fine, very strong. make sure to get one with the extra step, it sure will make it easer to fet back in, ours only had one.
