Maybe by volume of water but not by surface acres or distance of shoreline.

I have to agree. It all depends on what part of the lake you are measuring. Here's a comparison by miles of shoreline. I added the lake I boat on for comparison.

Lake Huron = 3825
Lake Superior = 2725
Lake Michigan = 1638
Lake of the Ozarks = 1150
Lake Erie = 750
Lake Ontario = 712
Lake Champlain = 587

Surface Area:

Superior = 31,820 sq mi
Huron = 23,010 sq mi
Michigan = 22,400 sq mi
Erie = 9,940 sq mi
Ontario = 7,540 sq mi

Champlain = 440 sq mi

Okeechobee = 730 sq mi

Everybody seems to forget about Lake Nipigon. It drains into the Nipigon River and then into Nipigon Bay of Lake Superior. It has a surface area of 1872 sq mi so Lake Champlain will have to settle for the seventh Great Lake title.

Great Slave Lake
Surface area 27,200 km2 (10,502 sq mi) Shore length1 3,057 km (1,900 mi)

Great Bear Lake
Surface area 31,153 km? (12,028 mi?) Shore length 2,719 km (1,690 mi) (plus 824 km (512 mi) island shoreline

Both of these are larger than Lakes Erie and Ontario....so if you are going to increase the count of Great Lakes....these would be # 4 & 5.

This is a dead issue. This was started by Sen Leahy in 1998 and it died back then...... this post was just dragged up from the basement......

Lake Champlain is not going to be a Great Lake. Not even connected unless you cound the Hudson River and the Erie Canal :eek: ....... it that was the case it should just be considered the fresh water part of the Atlantic Ocean! :p

Not exactly...Lake Champlain drains north to the St. Lawrence Seaway...just like the great lakes and perhaps this is why it may be considered part of the great lakes and others not.

The triangle loop: Erie Canal, Champlain Canal (Hudson River), Lake Champlain, Chambly Canal, St. Lawerence Seaway (Or canals to Ottowa), Lake Ontario, Oswego Canal and back to Erie Canal is a popular summer trip and navigable for small to medium sized cruisers (about <40')

That said, Lake Champlain is a great place because its not a "Great" Lake. That would surely bring more popularity to the lake and thus more development and destruction.
