I had a little 14' runabout out on Michigan many years back. I went out a mile or two to get a closer look at an anchored tanker. Swells so big I couldn't see over the top from the bottom. But I was never concerned. It's the breakers you have to worry about. I also had another 14' runabout out on Superior and the lake was like glass. Your best friend is a radio for weather reports. A weather radio would be a very wise investment. If you plan on going out a ways, get a VHF. They have weather channels on those too. Pay attention to specific Great Lakes equipment requirements! You'll need a flare gun among other things.

IVE BEEN KNOWN TO BE BRAVE BUT NOT STUPID. I WAS IN THE NAVY FOR 10 YRS.SEEN MY SHARE OF WAVES AND WATER..IM FEARLESS BUT ROUGH WATER SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME. ILL DO MY HOMEWORK MAKE SURE THE LAKE IS CALM.JUST DONT WANT TO GET SWOMPED WITH WAVES FROM THE BIG BOYS..BASS BOATS GOT SOME LOW SIDES.

Re: lake erie or lake michigan fishing

The Ohio Dept of Natural Resources is saying lake Erie is at its best for Walleye. A few of my buds that go up about every weekend seem to confirm what they have been saying. I had a 20' deep V that I took out on the lake. A bit wicked a few times but learned to only go out when the waves are 1 to 3 foot. Anything over that, you better have a much bigger boat and some bigger boys downstairs. My friends have been cleaning up on the Walleye using the Erie Dearie with the bright yellow/green body with a nightcrawler hooked. Good Luck and don't let us read about ya! :D

Can be just fine. Be carefull though and get a VHF radio as suggested earlier. Gives you all the info and is a good indicator when to come back in.
