Does anyone have experience camping, boating and fishing on Lake McConaughy in SE Nebraska? We live just south of Denver, CO and Lake McConaughy is about 3 - 3.5 hours away. It is much larger than the local lakes here in CO. Are the insects bad in the summer? How is the fishing? How are the boat ramps (concrete or dirt)?

We have a 19' cuddy cabin with a 5.0L I/O.

Thanks in advance.

You'll love McConaughy!
You can camp right on the beach if you desire. Plenty of room.It can get very windy, so watch the weather. The fishing can be quit good also. The water level is pretty low but it's still over 16 miles long but you need to do some research on where to launch your boat. There's plenty of info on the web.

Enjoy your trip!

How are the boat ramps (concrete or dirt)?
the ramps i've been to have been concrete. but like noted by waynerh, the water level is low. last i heard it was about 33% of full pool. last i heard several ramps were not servicable do to low water. ie. concrete ramp clean outta the water then sand to the waters edge. be aware of the sand out there to. ya best have a real 4x4 if ya get off the beaten path, and even if ya are on the beaten path is some places. i've never seen such gorgeous sand though. very nice, but will eat yer 4x4 in nothing flat. i've seen more than one buried to the axel. the locals around there use tractors to get around in that stuff. oh, did i mention the sand is soft!
that said. i've enjoyed several trips (just not as of late due to water level and my lack of a 4x4)to big mac. it's a great place to camp at. like waynerh said, camp anywhere ya want. very cool. good fishing best i know there too. do watch the wind there too. like noted. big mac can be real big. i consider myself to be a pretty good boater in big surf. i consider jet skis a most seaworthy craft. and i've been scared off big mac. launch my 3 person jetski there once and had to come right off. the waves were so large they were just splashing over the top of my ski and it took two people to keep it off the beach. putting it back on the tailer i broke a bunk. it can get real wild at big mac if it's windy. very fun place to go if ya have a real seaworthy boat and a 4x4...... i'd find out about the ramps prior to going from ndr or someone. i think that launchin a boat there right now may be dificult in some places. like i said, ain't been there since the drought started several years ago and due to low water and a hard launch, it's to far for me to go. 4.5-5 hrs for me. i'm in se nebraska......
