Hi all,
I will be going fishing with my brother-in-law to Henderson Harbor in NY,(Pulaski,Oswego area),this Memorial Day weekend.
What can I expect for action? I hear Walleye season opens around then. How about Salmon and Lakers?
Any tips?
I've never fished the Great Lakes before.
Thanks in advance.

Dave

This time of year can be strongly contingent upon the weather as prevailing lake conditions will probably determine if your fishing is in protected bay coves or on the actual lake.

Walleye and smallmouth action should be fairly good. Since I am more of a cast and blast guy I've never had much luck with lakers on Ontario but know some guys that do OK by trolling for them quite deep. It will also probably be a little too early for any consistent success on the salmon.

While fishing Ontario don't forget the premium northern pike and musky fishing that is recognized on the St. Lawrence river throughout the Thousand Islands region. This is only about another hour north of where you are planning to go.

good luck
Kevin

I used to live in Oswego but can't tell ya much about fishing up there now. I can tell ya don't try to launch in Oswego on that weekend unless you like to wait in line for a while

I know that if you troll near the mouth of the St Lawrence, you should hit some good fish. Problem is trying to find out how deep they are. put the downriggers at about 40 feet in some places with brightly colored spoons. Also, bring bug spary. Last time I was there the horseflies almost carried us away!

Huge football shaped brown trout!! Also hope for some calm and clear days, most days on Ontario are like being in a storm in the north atlantic.

Hope so Gaugeguy!!
My bro-in-law lives over by you in Hillsboro NH.
Born and raised New Englander myself but never been to Ontario.
He's been, but never in the summer, so he's unsure what the Cap. will be targeting.

Floridian-now Dave :D

I haven't been to Henderson Harbor in about 7 years. I have friends that go twice a year, and I am pretty sure they target the big browns in the spring. Which charter are you going out with?

Hillsboro is only about 5 miles away from me :D

Hey Gaugeguy, finally found out the charter boat we're going on. Jerrys sportfishing charters.
Here is a link http://www.jerrysportfishn.com/
Should be a blast. Hope the weather cooperates.
The guys you know that go don't have a buddy named Robitaille do they? He's my bro-in-law and goes about twice a year also.

Dave

Hi Dave,
I just talked to my buddies about this the other day. They actually go out with Seaweed Charters off of Mexico Point. Captain Earl Gardner. They have also used The Lucky Dutchman, but had way better luck with Capt. Earl.

Good luck and enjoy!!

Thanks all for your info.
I'm heading up tomorrow. It'll be nice to escape the 90 degree oven for some cooler temps.
I'll let ya know the outcome when I get back to FL.
Hopefully there will be some salmon or trout(maybe walleye?) fillets in my near future.

Anxious Dave
