Thin out your resin ( poly or epoxy ) with acetone ( up to 20% ) for the first coat then less reduction untill you have no more absorbtion..

Dont miss the windows of cures.. ( dont thin coat and wait a day .. then coat again.. )

YOU HAVE TO DO THIS IN ONE SHOT DAY.. then reprep or put the board in there for hot coat ( still tacky ) .. If you miss the window then there is no going back..

Its a Fiberglassers trick..

YD.

This was a seal coat I did, unthinned, and no glass. I was waiting to put the mat and rovin. Do I have to sand this back down to bare wood and reseal?

Re: Laminating a Transom and resin?

Since your using my resin I can say this, don't thin it, at least not the 10 or 20% recommended.

Adding anything to resin or gel coat, this includes epoxy, only degrades the product.
It also does nothing to keep the wood from rotting.
While adding less than 3 to 5% may not show any noticeable problems at first, the product is still weakened.

Solvents reduce the water, UV and crack resistance, plus the over all physical properties of the resin, this isn't something you want to build a boat from.

I didn't thin the resin, but I like the idea of helping the resin penetrate the wood. However, I don't like the idea of weakened resin. I didn't thin the resin on the transom, that is the only wood I've sealed so far. Do I need to sand the seal coat to bare wood before I glass the exposed side of the transom? I plan on doing the 'rough and scuff'.

JAFO,

Don't think too much about this. Remember, whatever you do, it will be stroinger and better than the original. Is it better to certain things a certain way sure...is it absoulute...no. Just ruff it up, wipe with actetone, and start laying on your glass. Eerything will be fine.

ondarvr goes into great detail on my thread about this and the proper way to seal wood with resin....its early on and i think i flagged it in the index (called it exellent information on glassing or something).

and btw.....that quote was from a conversation that ondarvr and i had when he was in the area.
he has a fantastic way of making you understand not to over think things in boat building while holding your gut laughing and trying not to spill your beer.
