Re: Laptop cooling pads

Laptops are designed and built to run just as they are, I own three and thats the way I use them. Do not use them for long periods of time on soft surfaces that the machine may sink into to the point that the vents get blocked, ie on a bed or cushion.

Chillpads etc are no more than a money grabbing gimmick that ppl do not need.

Electronics always run better and longevity increases when they are kept cooler.

I use the targus pad as posted earlier. Its cheap, quiet and works very well. My processor fan runs about a quarter as often when im using mg cooling pad compared to without. I use my machine for lots of video editing and photo processing so it gets hot. There is a very noticable difference between the heat on the bottom of the machine with or without the cooling pad.

Re: Laptop cooling pads

The effectiveness of the cooling pads in extending the life of the product maybe uncertain, but they do effectively reduce the operating temperature of the laptop. Much of the heat in a laptop is dissipated thru radiated heat through the case, keyboard etc etc. The fans only come on when the radiated cooling effect is overcome by too much heat load. By running a cooling pad, you are removing the radiated heat much more efficiently from the "body" of the laptop, thereby reducing its ambient operating temperature.

As mentioned earlier, heat is the biggest enemy of any electronic device. Anything that can reduce the operating temperature can only be a good thing. I'm running a 17" Dell that does alot of intensive CAD work and it sits on a Cooler Master X-Slim. Very quiet and a very cool Dell.

Re: Laptop cooling pads

After re-reading some of these posts I came to conclusion that maybe chill pads have a place. As well as my 3 laptops I have two desktops and one is a gaming machine, it gets HOT and such has extra cooling. I guess same with laptops, some apps will work the machine and generate heat as Moody Blue says with CAD mine run mainly spreadsheets. I take back my comment, maybe they are not such a gimmick.
