Re: Laptop keyboard problem. Ya'll can breath deep now!

Hey all, thanks for putting on your thinking caps for me. The end result, per IBM, Wipe it clean and start over. IBM told me that the hardrive contained all I needed to do that but when we went a lookin, it was not there. They will send me a Restore Disc. I'm not sure how that is different than a typical reformat of the HD and a reload of the OS but the results are the same. Save everything you can and reload the rest after the restore.

I had emailed RegMechanic to see if their program might be of some help but got no response. I think the registry programs are of limited value.

I almost always prefer the genuine Micro$oft install disks since the OEM disks tend to be customized beyond what I consider reasonable- HOWEVER, this is an exception since laptops seem to be a special breed and can be a bit more quirky. The restore disk is very desireable for laptops since it will be tuned to the laptop's liking. The best device drivers will already be there and it should save some unnecessary additional hassle, as if there hasn't been enough already!

Just received the Restore CD's from IBM. Now I get to try my new little 256mb mini Cruzer USB menory do dad, to copy all of my daughter's data. It's nice to have the CD's. They state that they will only work on the stated models of IBM laptops.

How is a Restore CD different than a regular XP copy that you would buy?

The deed is done. The 256 mb mini cruzer memory do-dad worked great to back up all the data and the IBM restore CD's did their job as advertised. The keyboard is back. Now off to reload all of the programs including adding all of the protective stuff. Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas.

Boomyall, laptops are in my opinion a bit finnicky. The difference is that the full XP disk is not preconfigured to automatically answer the questions in the setup process the most optimum way your laptop will like, plus it will probably not have the most optimized device drivers like the restore disk will. Basically just more fine tuned for that particular machine. The result will be fewer loose ends and less headaches so long as it was done right in the first place by the OEM. While I prefer the options and control I have with the full XP for most desktops, I like a well executed restore disk for laptops. That way I don't have to go back and try to fix whatever I screwed up on it! :p

Thanks BearcatPr'd, it was very obvious that it was doing a lot of IBM specific things as it went thru the restore. I was dissappointed that it did not give me the option of partitioning the harddrive. I always do that on my desktops so that if you have to reload or restore the OS, your data is already 'saved'.
