It's going to be someone's fault. 40 year old interstate hiway bridges don't simply collapse, or at least they shouldn't.

I heard this morning that there is something like 590,000 bridges in this country, with about 30 % getting a fair rating or worse. It'll cost in the trillions of dollars over the next 5 years to get caught up in maintenance

But PW, how are we going to do that with conservative tax cut after conservative tax cut buying our votes? ;)

KaGee said "Some how, some way, some bone head will blame George Bush."

Don't worry, KaGee. If they do, the Bushies will just roll it back to Clinton as always.

Especially, Willie, granting tax cuts while fighting a half trillion dollar (and counting) needless war. I know! Let's strip one more can of beans from that welfare mom! That ought to just about cover it, I should think!

Ohio has no problems servicing it's bridges. It's all a matter of State's priorities. I guess Michigan would rather give their kids IPods for school. Their roads sure show it.

I just got back from Walmart. Rest assured Willy and PW, the welfare moms are doing quite well.

The Mn Department of Transportation did a safety study on that bridge in May of 2006. It was noted that there were many heat fatigue spots on that bridge. The crew working on the bridge when it went down were re surfacing it, not doing structure repair. Safety engineers figured the DOT would get around to fixing the fatigue issues by around 2010. Minnesota also uses a ton of salt each year on that bridge during the winter. The last decade or so has been minor but we used to have some real snow storms forty years ago and there has been a lot of time for salt to start eating away at important things in that bridge.

hmmm... According to fed DOT survey in 2005, Ohio has about 28,000 bridges, with 25 % either functionally deficient or obsolete. Michigan has 68,000 bridges, with 27% fuctionally deficient or obsolete.

Neither of them are stellar numbers, but hardly vastly different from each other.

State by State analysis are available on www.abrams.msnbc.com using FDOT data.

Before making a political statement and argument, it's probably handy to find out if your premise can be shown to be at least remotely accurate with the actual data.

They were working on this bridge using a pile driver, notice how rusty it looks in this picture. I understand it is about forty years old, we have some over the Mississippi here in the St Louis area, sure hope they are better shape then that one. I have driven over that bridge many times in the nineties; we had a terminal off of University Street not to far from the bridge.:(

Seems to me those are 4 pretty small pilings..and cement deteriorates

Yup, N' as Mr Tree stated: look at the obvious rust on the steel cornecting the closest one in the picture. Forty years of hot summers n' cold winters with lots o' salt can't help. JR

It is quite the span however the cement pilings did not give way and were not the reason of the collapse.

My opinion is years of traffic with resent estimates of over 140,000 vehicles per day many of which are LARGE trucks which really puts a lot of stress on Bridges along with older bridge design not used anymore, throw in late 60's welding which can be less the stellar and other variables like salt, chemicals, condensation from the River plus maybe some Bridge inspection failures possibly all leading to this disaster.

My 2 cents......what say you?

"But Little Johnny did it tooooooo!!" Mr. Tree the fact is that all modern Democrats want to raise taxes n' dim wits support 'em no matter what they want. Republicans, (most) want less taxes. Logic to a Cornservative would dictate that dim wit Dem voters should voluntarily pay more taxes if it is such a good thing! (Just like Cornservatives give far more to charity voluntarily), which is cornsistent with there take care of yer own philosophy.

Fact is: Liberals actually jus' want to CORNTROL others, (in every possible way) n' want to cause disasters, (as the massive tax increase the Dems plan surely would cause), to acquire greater power, because the dim wit supporters will believe the MSM when it blames the "mean Republicans" fer the recession caused by the Democrats' intentional actions. N' ya know who the VICTIMS of the economic downturn would vote for don't ya? I knew you would know Mr Tree, yer sooooooo smart!!

The ol' nagin' question the comes ta mind: Is Liberalism a mental disorder? Hmmmmmmm?

WHEN YOUR BRIDGE GETS A 50 OUT OF 100 for structural integrity WTF do you expect to happen if you ignore the report

Yup, The Einstien Libs here in the State of Washington blew up a perfectly good "King Dome" (with a brand new $70 Million dollar roof built by Democrat Union labor), after the Liberal voters here actually voted against it, (believe it or not), and built two side by side stadiums, (yes Mrs Jones: Democrat Union Labor), that were the most expensive built on this planet at the time.

We have two very dangerous very critical transportation structures that we lack money to rebuild because of the two stadiums I'm talking about. N' Business is as good as it ever gets here in God's Country! BTW the Seattle Super Sonics are trying to leave town 'cause they don't like the fancy taxpayer funded digs they had built for them recently. One is a floating bridge that I drive over every day that scores 52, the other is a "viaduct" (similar to the structure that pancaked in Oakland in the 1989 earthquake), very close to the stadiums I'm whinin' about (that scores in the 20s).

Seattle is a VERY VERY Liberal town, so the ol' question comes up: Is Liberalism a mental disorder?
I report you decide! :D:D:D JR

How can you argue with someone about a bridge who has a screen name like that?

It wasn't four minutes after the Minneapolis bridge collapse that the kook left-wing blogs started pointing fingers at President Bush. The Democrats and Drive-By Media quickly followed, blaming the war in Iraq and tax cuts for the disaster. Everything is a zero sum game to them, but the truth is that most of the states are awash in money. The state of Minnesota is building new stadiums and funding zoo exhibits rather than fix bridges. How is that the fault of our being in Iraq? Barney Frank says the bridge collapse teaches us that we have to "pool our resources." That's liberal code for "raise taxes."
