Laser thermometer to use with 'Rude 20HP

Harbor freight has one for about $30 with coupon. Most of HF's stuff (if made with more than one part) is marginal at best, but the price is enticing. Anyone have one of HF's laser thermometers that can respond with its reliability/durability/accuracy?

Yup, I have one...and I tested it against a high end digital contact thermometer, the HF was 1 degree off....close enough for Gov't work.

Accurate...? I don't know...maybe index it against boiling water, burning paper, or a good thermostat?

The paperwork said it was accurate within +/- four degrees & German engineered...which seems tolerable.

Just wondering if it's crap like I suspect.

I just bought one to make sure the cat was working right on the truck, it did show a 100*+ difference,,, so it was close enough for me

I should add that the one I got wouldn't make contact with the battery and I thought it was dead. I had to shim the bottom of the 9V battery so it worked Go figure,,, Harbor Freight

You are talking about the catalytic converter...right?

Yeah, I used it to check the catalytic converter in/out temps. The codes the truck was throwing said o2 sensors or cat, just wanted to double check before replacing anything.

I've had all the ones listed plus high end models, there's little difference in the accuracy from the cheapest to the most expensive, at least for this type of use. I use them all the time, the small one TD listed can be had for $6.99 at times, I just picked up two at $9.99 for a customer. The biggest problem with the small one is being so small it can easily be misplaced, even in a pocket.

yeah, but it fits real well in the boat bag, that always goes with me. my hearing aids are what i loose, in my pocket.

OK Went and bought it today. Thirty bucks...not the end of the world if it's crap, but sounds like it may be OK for boating. It's got a one year warranty!
